The first eyewitness to report the lights was a German engineer, John William Gerard de Brahm, who wrote of lights over the North Carolina hills in his journal in 1771. I jammed my old truck in first gear and roasted tires all the way through first, snatched second gear and drove as fast as I could home. Most parts of the trail are desolate, and remote, cutting through mountains and thick forests which have brought about some chilly encounters for the hikers. The kids started laughing and one of them replied, “This isn’t the Appalachian Trail,” as they kept walking off.

This town, Dudley town was built in the 18th century and was abandoned by the inhabitants in the 19th century with visible ruins being left behind. Or maybe the Appalachian Mountains have earned all the legends we’ve ascribed to them—and more—since they’ve been around long enough to witness the development of most life on Earth. The Pyrenees being a guardian dog immediately sensed that something was wrong and so he turned to face the danger, belting out deep barks and growls in that direction.Others say appalachia is a beautiful, mountainous area of the country with it’s own culture, and nothing more. It is unknown whether he was haunted by the Bell Witch, but the legend has endured in Appalachia as one of its most famous ghost stories.

Dudley town has a very weird nickname, the village of the damned which is believed to have been cursed a long time ago. So, in short, I do think the Mothman urban legend is simply a legend, but it will surely keep a kid from misbehaving.

The Bell Witch Hauntings began when John Bell, his wife Lucy Bell, and their children moved from North Carolina to present-day Adams, Tennessee.

It was a threatening noise, something was definitely wrong and as I ran with him on my shoulders back to the house, the stench of death again began to fill the air. In 1862, there were three major Civil War battles which were fought over different fronts on what is now known as the Maryland section that is along the Appalachian Mountain Trail. This haunting was also the inspiration for multiple different horror films and television productions like The Blair Witch Project, Bell Witch Haunting, and multiple other books, episodic installments, and more.
