Description

Hannay is a thirteen-episode (spread over two seasons) TV series featuring the hero of John Buchan’s classic thrillers, Richard Hannay.

As tension mounts in Europe, the British Government prepares antidotes against possible germ warface, and Richard Hannay finds himself at the centre of a demonic plot to steal them. A clumsy embarrassingly obvious script, stodgy direction, heavy-handed political messaging, atrocious acting, leaden pacing, a total lack of action, dull and humourless. In these episodes, Hannay finds himself charged with murder and suspects he has been framed by his arch-nemesis, the dastardly German officer Count Von Schwabing (Gavin Richards). Represented in London by the cunning and ruthless Count Von Schwabing, Germany is intent on causing trouble however and wherever she can—and Richard Hannay attracts trouble as a magnet attracts iron-filings! I am a big fan of The 39 Steps (all four films and the Criterion Theatre production) and I have found Hannay to be a thoroughly enjoyable viewing experience.Playwright Patrick Barlow's comedic stage adaptation of the 1935 Hitchcock film opened in London's Tricycle Theatre, and after a successful run, transferred to the Criterion Theatre in Piccadilly.

The mock German-English accents - a cliche which becomes a parody - slightly spoiled things for me, but not too much. In this theatrical adaptation, the character's full name is given as Richard Charles Arbuthnot Hannay. Several men have received anonymous threatening letters, all in the form of quotations from Shakespeare. Robert Powell is again excellent reprising his role as the all round decent chap `Hannay', with just the right mix of suave charm, liberal intellect and patriotic bravery. We take pride in offering a wide selection of used books, from classics to hidden gems, ensuring theres something for every literary palate.Represented in London by the cunning and ruthless Count Von Schwabing, Germany is intent on causing trouble however and wherever she can—and Richard Hannay attracts trouble as a magnet attracts iron filings! On the death of his friend, Pelham Swinburne, Hannay inherits a walking-stick, field glasses and the lighthouse on a Fenland marsh . He finds himself caught up in a spy drama anyway, with the Germans hatching dastardly plots and poor Hannay getting himself repeatedly captured, tortured and threatened with certain death. Robert Powell followed up his stirring performance as Hannay in the 70s version of '39 Steps' with this 80s TV series featuring the same character. Soon after the end of the war, Hannay marries Mary Lamington, and the following year they have a son, Peter John Hannay. Hannay gets involved with a woman and he’s charmed by her, and he meets charismatic hard-driving businessman and gambler Sir Marcus Leonard (Anthony Valentine).By joining TV Guide, you agree to our Terms of Use and acknowledge the data practices in our Privacy Policy.
