And although it was good to read from that point, there wasn't really that excitement that the first three books had. However, Swallow pulls off some strong characters including Garro, managing to deliver some memorable scenes such as Mortarion signing Garro’s death warrant, helping to prevent the book from becoming your typical Bolter-Porn book. He clings to the rising Lectitio Divinitatus to keep faith when he runs out of good ideas and only has bad ones, like marooning the titular Eisenstein in space. The blurb tells you straight up, Garro and his loyals are heading for Terra to bring news of the betrayal to the Emperor himself. The Heresy series is not easy to get into without a little understanding of background of the 40K universe but as with False Gods (Book 2) this is a fine place to start.

Brought before Malcador the Sigillite Garro, Iacton Qruze and a Sister of Silence commander are given a speech implying that they become the first of the Inquisition. The pre-loved books are carefully cleaned and maintained offering a wide variety of general and specialist titles from children's to adults. Garro stands for the original old Death Guard known as The Dusk Raiders whom were later renamed Death Guard once their Primarch Mortarion was found by the Emperor. I have always loved the moments in the early HH novels where key characters first find out about the betrayal. It’s a fight and flight scenario and one that is well told – though at times the story gets swamped by the authors overuse of descriptive narrative. Having witnessed the terrible massacre on Isstvan III, Death Guard Captain Garro seizes a ship and sets a course for Terra to warn the Emperor of Horus’s treachery. Lots of trials and tribulations occur and some choice banter – including a situation with Life-Eater virus (which is used to exterminate… well… everything on Istavaan III) and soon after news of the betrayal arrives to Garro via a desperate Tarvitz. Decius’s eyes flashed at the old veteran’s jibe, but Garro caught the moment and laughed softly, defusing it.

But it has to be mentioned, that the every time the narrator encounters an 's' - your headphones are going to explode. I enjoyed this book for what it was, a dose of light Warhammer 40k with a good section of carnage that the Space Marines do best. An interesting feature that I picked up in this book, or at least took note of for the first time, was that corpses reanimated by the Warp apparently can maintain their memories. Euphrati Keeler has the rest of her sharp edges shaved off so she can be a vehicle for a wider religious movement but I think it's fine, and it provides a link to Garro’s motivations and decision-marking.It's still not high art, but considering how puerile and simplistic they might have been, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Finally unless you like OTT Chaos gross combat there really isn't much to the story beyond what was already covered in Galaxy in Flames, there was a moment of tension when Garro finds that others will not accept his report of traitorous activity, but this is resolved in a way that makes one question "why not start with the video evidence?

DARK HORIZON, his new stand-alone thriller, is out now from Welbeck; OUTLAW, the 6th Marc Dane novel, is published by Bonnier, and the 4th book in the series - SHADOW - is available in the USA from Forge. Can Garro and his men survive the depredations of Chaos and get his warning to the Emperor before Horus' plans reach fruition?

Taken to Terra to account for themselves, Garro and his men convince Dorn of Horus's betrayal helped by Euphrati Keeler and are placed in holding cells of Terra's moon Luna, in the stronghold of the Sisters of Silence. Can Garro and his men survive the depredations of Chaos and get his warning to the Emperor before Horus's plans reach fruition? The middle is most statisfying especialy if you have read the previous books because now the storryline from Galaxy in Flames carries on. In a preliminary battle to take an outer facility held by the rebels the Death Guard and Emperor's Children encounter a Warsinger, one of the rebel leaders who can create sonic force and inspire their followers through their singing.I had a gap of 6 months or more between book 3 and book 4, but I can't wait to charge through a few more of these right now. Regardless of any flaws though, Flight of the Eisenstein is a sold entry into the series and one that you shouldn’t really miss.
