In the good years when Dow’s does not declare a Vintage, the best Ports of Quinta do Bomfim are carefully selected and bottled as Dow’s Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port. This wine has received wide critical acclaim, most notably a Gold Medal at the International Wine Challenge (London, 2005). One of the Douro Valley’s finest vineyards, Bomfim is the heart of the company’s greatest Ports, having provided the main structure for Dow’s Vintages since it was acquired in 1896. Three innovative robotic lagares have now been installed at the winery, and Vintage Port is made there in non-declared years and released en primeur. It has a classic riverside location, with south facing vineyards, ensuring prolonged exposure to the sun. The whole Quinta Do Bomfim vineyard is “A-rated”, the highest quality grading conferred by the region’s wine regulatory body. Bomfim is a classic ‘River Quinta’ with many natural advantages: it is south-facing ensuring ample exposure to the sun; its stony schist soil affords excellent drainage allowing water to reach the vines’ deep roots; the annual rainfall is near perfect at 800mm (15 year annual average); the altitude ranges from 120 to 340 metres above sea level, accommodating both gentle gradients lower down and progressively steeper slopes higher up the valley side, as well as offering a variety of aspects. We use cookies to enhance your site experience, improve our understanding analysing our site traffic finally to enable social media features.

The property is situated in the centre of the best wine-producing area, known as the ‘Cima Corgo’, which offers an ideal balance between the relatively wet ‘Baixo Corgo’ to the west (with sometimes excessively rich soils for the production of great Port) and the intense heat of the ‘Douro Superior’ to the east. Located on the river at Pinhão, it is widely recognised as one of the finest properties in the Upper Douro. The underlying objective is always to strive for maximum quality and that this may be reflected in the excellence of the Dow’s Ports in the bottle. The property’s location offers the perfect balance between the harsh extremes of the eastern end of the valley and the overly rich soils and abundant rainfall of the lower Douro. However, even in a slightly lesser vintage most Port Houses can make a very good wine from their top property. The very high percentage of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional planted on the estate result in the powerful aromas of mint and violets in the finest Ports from Bomfim. Dow’s Ports are made at two of the most famous Quintas in the Douro: Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, together with the privately family-owned quintas of Santinho, Fonte Branca and Cerdeira.

They will tend to mature a little earlier than the very rare declared years, but can be every bit as good as some other Vintage Ports. Abundant fruit flavours with hints of maple, raisins and ripe blackberries give elegance and poise to this wine. Exceptionally aromatic, with aromas of violets, which is quite typical of the Vintage Port from Dow's. The vineyards are now almost entirely planted in varietal batches, meaning each variety may be picked and subsequently vinified separately, thus allowing for each grape’s maximum potential to be achieved. Over the centuries, the winemakers at Bomfim have evolved a style that suits this particular vineyard; fermentations are a little longer, resulting in a drier Port Wine that has become the hallmark of Dows.Dow’s was one of the first Port companies to recognise the importance of vineyard ownership in the Douro. Thus, we have developed this policy so that you can learn how we use cookies and how you can manage them. From Symington Family Estates: “Spice and pepper balance the black chocolate flavours and these are very evident in all Bomfim Ports. Bomfim’ s wines are vinified in the quinta’s fermentation vats which have been successively upgraded over the years and which continue to produce excellent wines. The consistent climate in this part of the valley results in full ripening and very high quality wines produced in most years.

Some powerful tannins in the background, although these really play a minor role, only showing on the finish. Two-thirds of the vineyard is now over 20 years old, whilst one third is between 30 to 40 years old.Quinta do Bomfim is situated in the heart of the Douro winegrowing region, just east of Pinhão on the north bank of the river Douro. But you can also incorporate them into a meal, combining for instance a Steak au Poivre with a young Vintage. Quinta do Bomfim, one of the finest properties in the Upper Douro, was acquired by the company in 1896 and is the oldest quinta in continuous ownership. Rigorous fruit analysis is carried out every year, comparative micro-vinifications being conducted in a dedicated winemaking facility at Quinta do Sol.
