Or rather, she treats tiny little things as if they were international catastrophes and international catastrophes as if they were tiny little things.

Darling is the story of her growing up: the people she meets; the men she falls in love with; and her friendship, enduring and eternal, with Frances. Knight makes Linda’s third love affair, with French hotel tycoon Fabrice El Hassane, dizzyingly romantic. In the author’s reimagining, Linda and her siblings grow up as “utter freaks” on the sprawling Alconleigh farm in north Norfolk. Knight also takes a gleeful magnifying glass to the hypocrisies of modern life, from rigorous dieter Blanche going to restaurants solely for social media content, to Christian making Linda do all the housework, because paying a cleaner is “immoral”. I laughed out loud throughout, and thought that the characters were so impeccably described that I feel as though I know them.Franny, the narrator, is even less inconsequential than in the original; but Knight has so, so much fun with Uncle Matthew, Davey and Jassy, who were always the best characters anyway. Darling, it must be said, is all the better for Matthew and Sadie’s delight in one another: it makes the characters make sense. India Knight does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of Mitford's original story but brings overlays modernity that makes it more relatable for today.

She knows she doesn't want to marry 'a man who looks like a pudding', as her good and dull sister Louisa has done, and marries the flashy, handsome son of a UKIP peer instead. I haven’t read the original upon which it’s based - The Pursuit of Love - but will hunt down a copy to compare.

Knight’s characters are sparky and fun, and in some cases their relationships are crafted with more care than in Mitford’s original.
