Description

I’ve been eagerly anticipating this read and I’m so disappointed that I was disappointed by it. At the end of the first book, Princess Pearl, Gadabout the Great and Zog head off on a new adventure. This book begins with the Flying Doctors living the life of their dreams. Pearl is finally a doctor, Gadabout is performing surgery and Zog is flying them from patient to patient. They tend to a sunburnt mermaid, a unicorn with an extra horn and a lion who’s got the flu. Everything was going well and I was along for the ride … until Pearl is imprisoned by her uncle because, “Princesses can’t be doctors, silly girl!” The men (Gadabout and Zog) are then charged with trying to save this damsel in distress. It isn’t until Pearl diagnoses her uncle’s illness and cures him that he decides it’s acceptable for a Princess to be a doctor. As if she needed his permission! Released from captivity, Princess Pearl and her two male saviours (who, incidentally, tried to save her but didn’t) go off on their merry way, smiling and waving to the man who imprisoned her. Nope, sorry. That’s not a book I’d want to read again or put in front of a child. The first book? No hesitation. I still absolutely love it. I just wish I’d stopped there and imagined for myself the wonderful adventures that were to come for the Flying Doctors. He gazes at a tall tray of cupcakes, then takes a pink cupcake and eats it. He walks toward the window. A dove sits on the windowsill.

Gadabout gently cuts one of the unicorn’s horns off with his sword. The horn and branch fall to the ground. The king leads the girl down a hallway by the hand. They pass by golden-framed portraits on a wall of other kings and queens.

The girl rides through the sky on a plump orange flying dragon. A young man dressed as a court squire rides behind her on the dragon

Directed by Sean Mullen. Produced by Martin Pope and Michael Rose. Based on the Book “Zog and the Flying Dragons” by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler. Voices, Narrator, Sir Lenny Henry. Pearl, Patsy Ferran. Gadabout, Daniel Ings. Zog, Hugh Skinner. Mermaid, Alexandra Roach. Unicorn, Mark Bonnar. Lion, Lucian Msamati. King, Rob Brydon. Young Pearl, Rosabel Lawson. Additional Voices, Tim Hands.Zog flies awkwardly as he tries to land. He crashes into Gadabout, who examines a grey goat with a stethoscope. Pearl peeks cautiously out the doorway. Two guards walk down a hallway. Pearl tiptoes through the far end of the hallway. Pearl approaches a tall window at the end of the hallway. Sunlight streams in.

A portrait of Pearl, Gadabout, and Zog hangs in the hallway beside the portraits of kings and queens. The dragon dives down toward a clearing in a forest. Several animals, a deer, a fox, a squirrel and three rabbits gaze up.

Broadcasts

My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes. Pearl and the king glare at each other. He lies in bed facing away from Pearl. Pearl looks frustrated, then looks like she has an idea. Gadabout offers Zog a handshake. Zog scoops him up and hugs him. The windowsill breaks off. Gadabout and Zog fall to the ground. Two guards take Pearl away. A group of guards stares menacingly at Gadabout and Zog. The guards draw their weapons and charge at Gadabout and Zog.

I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married.

Welcome to screen-free play. Tonies replace bright, over-stimulating screens with hand-painted figures and simple tactile controls. A guard opens shutters on a window next to gadabout, crushing him behind a shutter. The guard closes the shutters. Gadabout falls toward Zog. Zog fails to catch him. Gadabout bows. He wears a white coat over a yellow shirt and a puffy green hat with yellow stripes. In 'Zog and the Flying Doctors,' Donaldson and Scheffler have crafted a sweet, historical, engaging story that is hard to not embrace, especially after reading some of their other tales that stem from the same spirit. içinden ejderhayla uçan doktorların geçtiği bir hikâye var elinizde ve yine de cinsiyetçilikten sapır sapır dökülen böyle bir kitap yazıyorsunuz, gerçekten korkunç.
