The hugely anti-climactic end, from which nothing was gained as a result of having undertaken the reading of this thing. The majority of the book follows Johannes after he discovers Elsa concealed behind a wall in the family’s guest room. I wanted to explore and tease out all the emotional and psychological elements that generate a lie, the irresistible urge to alter reality and outcome through use of words. My mother was rinsing a salad and I saw it first — a snail housed among the leaves — and with a flick of the hand she threw it in the rubbish.

Christine Leunens has published four novels, Primordial Soup, Caging Skies, A Can of Sunshine, and In Amber's Wake.

CAGING SKIES is a very thought provoking novel which takes place in Austria during and after World War II.

Then, gradually, it seemed to part company entirely with the movie storyline and go into darker realms than I felt willing to go.

a novel about Hitler's Third Reich without equal * Design Observer * Disturbing, moving, eminently readable - this is a story you won't be able to put down * My Weekly * A novel that breaks all the rules. No idea how anyone could read this and come up with the outline for Jojo Rabbit, the two are highly dissimilar, to say the least. How did he transform book Johannes (a terrible person who treats Elsa like literal property and lets her believe the war was won by Germany for FOUR YEARS after it ended) into the misled yet good-hearted kid we got in the film? The WWII backdrop is present enough to provide an environment of angst and oppression yet remains all the same subtle and eerie to let the confrontation between Elsa and Johannes take a hold of the reader's attention.

CL: First I read accounts and memoirs of former Hitler Youth and Band of German Maidens that I found at the museum’s library. I kicked my legs to make the time go faster when suddenly there was a tremendous noise outdoors, as if the whole sky was falling. CL: My agent, Laura Susijn, initially had trouble selling the book, but thankfully she had faith in it and persisted, and though it wasn’t first published in its original language, English, she found foreign publishers who agreed that it was an important work and translations in French, Italian, Spanish, and Catalan ensued. Interestingly paradoxical in that it is slow paced while a lot is happening, Leunens' style manages to quickly get hold of my attention and drag me chapter after chapter deeper in some sort of insanity, a confusion of roles where the duel between the main protagonists, Johannes and Elsa let me wondering who is playing who.it was just so baddddd, and I could not tell what this book was trying to do because it failed to do anything.
