Description

AD: Following reverses elsewhere in the empire the garrison of Britannia is put under continuing pressure with both troop relocations and from the resurgent Caledonian tribes. Roman withdrawal from Scotland is from hereon undertaken in fairly rapid then consolidating stages further south. These retreats probably closely paralleled tribal boundaries or major natural features such as rivers. Evacuated tribal areas were most likely bound with treaties and agreements of aid and military assistance as was common along the Rhine frontier. Suggested staged withdrawal: If you have a few more hours and prefer to hike instead of more cultural/history stops (see below), you can also follow the steep but rewarding trail up to Loch Skeen. It leads through the Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve, brings you even closer to the waterfall and into the wilderness of this remote hill range. AD: Roman coin issues record the conclusion of the war in Britannia, though Hadrian takes credit on the inscription of the coin, an indication of the political value of the conclusion of the war after its poor start for the Romans.

We went to the Grapes for an evening of classic tunes and traditional music, the best Guinness this side of the Irish Sea, and lots of mingling with friendly locals. It’s the kind of pub, you enter as a stranger and leave with a bunch of new friends! For all that – well the beautiful gardens at least – you can thank the Gulf Stream – if only, it came with the tropical temperatures too…

The Maphill difference

AD: Civil war within the Roman empire as various contenders fight for supreme control. Clodius Albinus, governor of Britain crosses to the continent with most of the British garrison and is narrowly but decisively defeated at Lyons by Septimus Severus. Probable that Hadrian’s Wall is denuded of troops during this episode and that the Caledonians and Maetae (who can safely assume to have been in treaty agreement with Albinus) act in concert to take advantage of the situation following the death of Albinus. The best pubs in Dumfries & Galloway| A bar to highlight in Dumfries & Galloway is The Grapes in Stranraer, a popular pub and music venue. The owner is a huge country fan and often brings over acts from the American south and from all over Europe to play at the pub, and there are regular trad music sessions as well. Day 5: Dumfries & Galloway

An hour’s drive away is Scotland’s most southwesterly point, the jaw-droppingly dramatic Mull of Galloway. Grab a bite to eat at Gallie Craig, a clifftop coffee shop with breathtaking vistas from the viewing platform outside – then book a tour of the iconic Mull of Galloway Lighthouse and climb its 115 steps to the lantern room and balcony. The panorama that opens up extends to Northern Ireland, Cumbria and the Isle of Man. AD: Warfare in Scotland prosecuted for the Romans by the martinet General Ulpius Marcellus. Hostilities are not concluded till 184 when Commodus is acclaimed Imperator and takes the title “Britannicus”. An altar records a legionary vexillation based at Castlecary at this time while Mumrills may have been rebuilt. It is also possible Cramond and perhaps Carriden remained in continuous occupation through to early next century however by the mid 180s it would appear that all other Roman posts in Scotland without recourse to easy re-supply from the sea are given up as untenable. Rosslyn Chapel is covered in decorative elements inside and out, from gargoyles and statues to columns and stained-glass windows. The stone is carved in the most intricate manner and some of the columns on the inside, in particular, have caused a lot of artistic jealousy. Apparently, the master stonemason even killed one of his apprentices for carving a more beautiful column than him! However, despite having two paid jobs, his finances remained shaky. He had become a partner in a printing firm, which put him into debt, not helped by the enormous sums he spent on his mansion, Abbotsford. From 1813, writing to pay the bills, Scott thumped out a flood of historical novels, producing his best work within the space of ten years: Waverley (1814), The Antiquary (1816), Rob Roy and The Heart of Midlothian (both 1818), as well as two notable novels set in England, Ivanhoe (1819) and Kenilworth (1821).We actually did not manage to stop in Peebles. Instead, we were headed to Galashiels for a big shop before the rain came crashing down. Additional stop: The Pentland Hills I myself prefer the use of paper roadmaps when I’m on the road in Scotland as they have the best detailed information and they also work without a smartphone, or a phone with a dead battery, or when there is no internet connection. There are a few good quality paper roadmaps available, I recommend using the Philip’s Navigator Scotland: (A4 Spiral binding) or the Visit Scotland Touring Map. If you go for the highest detail in localised maps there is nothing better than the Ordnance Survey Landranger Maps. These maps are super detailed, are great for exploring areas and are perfect for when you’re walking too.
