What there aren't, though, are better videography cameras out there (unless you step up to a cinema camera). So if you're happy with a capable stills body because what you really want are blow-away video features, the S5 IIX is your camera. If the Panasonic Lumix S5 IIX isn't for you If you’re on the fence about those features and see them more as nice to haves, it may be worth saving your money and putting it towards one of the excellent LUMIX S F1.8 prime lenses. However, I would say it’s better to get a camera you can grow into. Even if it has features you may not feel you need right now, if you can afford it, it could make more sense to get the higher specced model as it will likely serve you in the long term as your filmmaking evolves. Based on the CIPA standard [Yaw/Pitch direction: focusing distance f=200mm when S-E70200 is used. Firmware must be updated to the latest version. Recording stops when the continuous recording time exceeds 30 minutes in [6K/29.97p] [6K/25.00p] [5.9K/29.97p] [5.9K/25.00p] when Thermal Management mode is set to Standard.

The sensor, while not new, has been further developed to include phase-detection pixels as part of the hybrid focusing system. This makes the S5II and S5IIX the first Panasonic Lumix cameras to incorporate phase detection focusing. Video Lumix menus are logical to navigate and the camera has enough customizable function buttons to limit menu-diving expeditions. Everything you need regularly is at your fingertips except for the USB-C SSD recording option, which is buried in the setup menu. Inexplicably, there’s also no option to add it to shortcuts at the time of writing. That aside, the S5II X is easy to get comfortable with, even for someone who’s never used a Lumix before. The S5 II also sees its second card slot upgraded to the UHS-II standard, allowing the use of faster SD cards in both slots. Notably, even with the fastest V90-rated cards, UHS-II isn't fast enough to record all the S5 IIX's video modes, with the most demanding of its All-I capture modes and all its 4K and 5.8K ProRes modes requiring the use of an external SSD. Panasonic says it's been working with third-party accessory makers to provide useful ways to attach popular SSDs to the camera.

The biggest news is the inclusion of on-sensor phase detection: a technology Panasonic has not previously used. Phase detection essentially works by generating two views of the scene from slightly different perspectives (typically by forming separate images that 'look' through the left and right sides of the lens) and comparing them. Just as with human vision that uses two eyes set apart from one another, this enables the camera to establish an understanding of distance and depth in the scene. With a new imaging engine developed within the L 2 Technology partnership formed by LEICA and LUMIX, and a new 24-megapixel sensor, the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX are the first LUMIX cameras to offer Hybrid Phase Detection Auto-Focus (PDAF).What the company has said is that its algorithms have been re-worked and that the camera assesses camera motion more precisely. We've been impressed with what we've seen from the S5 II so far, in terms of keeping both stills still and video clips smooth. The Boost IS mode, which tries to cancel all movement for a tripod-like video look, is particularly impressive. The 3” vari-angle monitor is crisp and clear and is also touch-sensitive. The OLED EVF is superb, with plenty of detail provided by its 3,680K dot resolution. Something the unedited images above demonstrate is the variations in the S5IIX’s internal light metering, an issue I experienced throughout my time testing the camera. Both ISO test shots above were taken in multi-metering mode, using the same setup under fixed artificial lighting with the light meter displaying EV-0, but you can see how dark the first shot is compared to the second. This is problematic where consistency between shots is important. Panasonic Lumix S5IIX review: Video performance Given the number of similarities between the Lumix S5II and S5IIX, it may not be easy to choose the best camera for your needs. That is unless you specifically need streaming, SSD recording or more advanced video recording capabilities, then the choice is simple, go for the S5II X.

Panasonic Lumix S5IIX Handling

The S5IIX performs impressively for high-speed photography. Using two UHS-II V60 cards, the S5IIX was able to shoot RAW & Fine JPEG in continuous high-speed drive for over 200 shots. That’s nearly 7 seconds of 30fps shooting with the e-shutter, or over 22 seconds at 9fps using mechanical shutter. Even after 200 shots, the buffers weren’t totally filled. I wasn’t able to view my burst photos straight away, but could carry on taking single photos as the camera wrote the image to cards. This is great to see, as it could make the difference between missing or capturing a crucial ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ shot at, for example, a wedding. Operating very much like a DSLR, the Panasonic Lumix hybrid mirrorless cameras are absolutely photographers' cameras. The ergonomics will be instantly familiar to those who have moved from the DSLR form factor, with a plentiful supply of buttons, dials and switches that make a smoothly efficient hands-on experience, rather than having to delve continuously into various menus. The S5 was a great camera, the S5 II made many improvements and the S5 II X continues this path, with a hybrid that also extends the video capabilities. The S5 II has already been reviewed and is Highly Recommended and the Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 lens is an Editor's Choice, so let's see how the S5 II X plus the same lens continue with this already well-established path of excellence. The S5 II gains the ability to import LUTs in the industry-standard .cube format (in addition to Panasonic's own .VLT type). It can store up to 10 LUTs and adds the ability to apply the LUT to the footage as you shoot. Doing do means you lose post-processing flexibility, putting greater emphasis on getting exposure and white balance right in-camera, but it lets you achieve the look you want straight out of camera. S5 IIX features There really is very little to say negative about the Lumix S5IIX. It’s an all round fantastic camera, which excels at doing what it was designed to do, and pleasing who it was designed to please.

Does the S5 II do enough to be seen as a serious contender to the likes of Canon's EOS R6 II or even Nikon's Z6 II? It helps its case that Leica, Panasonic and Sigma are doing a good job of building a system around the L-mount, meaning there are many more native lenses available than for Canon or Nikon's mirrorless systems. The S5II was already a video-centric camera, offering features like; best in-class active image stabilization, waveform monitoring, shutter angle control, 4 channel audio and 10-bit color in almost all of its video formats. However, the Lumix S5 IIX takes things a step further, especially for pro-filmmakers.The LUMIX S5IIX features a 24.2MP full-frame sensor. If you are shooting stills, 24MP delivers highly detailed shots, with enough resolution for moderate cropping and for online display or small-to-medium-sized prints. The S5 II does not come with its own charger and instead used the USB-PD standard to allow in-camera charging, operation or operation and charging, when connected to high-current power sources. As I mentioned earlier, the Panasonic Lumix S5IIX has a newly designed 24.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor. That’s the same resolution as the Panasonic Lumix S5 but like the S5II, the S5IIX has phase detection pixels on the sensor. This means that S5II and S5IIX have a hybrid focusing system that uses both phase detection and contrast detection. It’s a welcome arrival and something that videographers have been asking for from Panasonic for a long time. The start-up time is slightly sluggish compared to many cameras, perhaps taking a good 2-3 seconds before we are ready for action, but once up and running everything is crisp and efficient and the controls are responsive and have a high-quality feel to them. Enjoy creative live streaming with digital single lens mirrorless cameras, both indoors and outdoors. Live streaming (RTMP/RTMPS protocol) can be easily configured via the LUMIX Sync app (Android / iOS). In environments with a lot of radio interference, stable communication speed can be ensured by tethering the camera via USB to a smartphone.
