However, looking at the enormous square toebox, we can tell that there is significantly more room for toe splay in this Altra shoe compared to the average running shoe. Although the midsole of the Escalante 3 has many great features, there are a few things that some runners may not find ideal. The midsole may feel too rigid for some runners–especially those just coming from the Escalante 2.5. In addition, the break-in period can be uncomfortable for some. Finally, the Escalante 3 does not have the luxurious cushioning of some other Altra models, such as the Torin or Vanish Tempo, so it is not the most highly cushioned among the company’s midsoles. Outsole With a firmer midsole, you’re naturally being pushed into the final ankle and foot position at a faster speed. Even after 5 years, EGO TM has its firm place in the now modernized range of midsole materials from Altra – which in my opinion is completely justified! For me, the EVA-TPU compound is the perfect combination of soft, bouncy and durable. It may not have the luxurious, lush cushioning feel of EGO Max or PRO, but the Escalante doesn’t really aspire to compete with the likes of the Torin or Vanish Tempo, so that’s alright.

Andrea:I think the Escalante 3 is the best version yet of the shoe. By improving the stability of the upper and making the midsole a little firmer, Altra has improved on what was already a great shoe. From my perspective, the only thing Altra could do to further improve it would be to refine the upper so it is a little thinner and lighter. Otherwise, I am really pleased with the update and look forward to putting many more miles on the shoe. I received a very colorful version, dubbed the Altra Escalante 3 SE, and my print-happy friends and family members were all over the wild cheetah and daisy combination. I’m more of a solid color kinda girl, but the review goes on. Besides, it’s nice to venture outside of your comfort zone here and there. That’s why I still use the Escalante 3’s, but rotate them with minimal/barefoot shoes so I maintain barefoot strength! The midfoot does taper in, and that may not be for everyone. I believe this is what Altra refers to when they say “slim” fit. From the toe box, the shoe tapers inwards towards the midfoot, resulting in a “fitted” feel. I have a relatively average to wide mid-foot, and it can still work for me, and that’s because the upper is forgiving and doesn’t cause too much constriction. Interestingly, the midfoot area felt similar to the Lone Peak…. the widest “original” fit from Altra 🤔. So when shopping the Escalante 3, it might be one of the rare cases where it is not recommended to size up half a size for a running shoe. CostSome runners prefer the narrower toe boxes of shoes like Reebok’s Forever Floatride Energy. Lakota Gambill A Natural Take on Tech With a similar fit and feel to the Escalante 2’s, the Escalante Racer is an excellent choice for those who don’t mind more ground feel. What I can say for sure is that the extra rubber on the outsole has a positive effect on energy return. Curiously, the 20 gram weight increase doesn't really bother me when running. If you like to feel the road, but don't want to sacrifice cushioning entirely, you can't really go wrong with the Escalante 3. All in all, the shoe feels like a luxury sedan that you would ride around casually, but surprises you with a lively character when you put your foot on the gas. Interestingly, the Escalante 2.5 behaved very similarly to the barefoot shoe. These figures tell us the force when I hit the ground was lower in the Escalante 3.0. Another interesting pronation measurement is the speed at which pronation occurs. That’s how fast you move from the initial foot impact position to the final pronated position. Different shoe designs can have dramatic effects on both pronation angle and speed. Shoe

The upper is where most runners note the biggest shift from previous versions. The knit upper feels a bit more tightly stitched for enhanced snugness. Runners appreciate the shorter laces and an additional eyelet that was missing from the Escalante 2.5. Ultraspire Fitted Race Belt:The best way to carry your phone and goods on the run. No bounce and various sizes for waist. (Also recommend the Naked belt) Over the past few years, shoemakers have poured resources into developing newer and better cushioning foams, and Altra is no exception. The company uses three main cushioning materials in its shoes: Ego, Ego Max, and Ego Pro. (Quantic, another cushioning material the brand developed, is being phased out.)My first interesting option is a new shoe from Xero Shoes. The Nexus Knit. It actually feels a lot like an old Escalante. I’d just buy a 1/2 size large cause it first a little short. And it’s just a tough heavier. Otherwise, super interesting. Basically, the Altra Escalante 3 is just what Altra fans are looking for. Let’s get to the specifics. The Good Stability:B (Neutral, zero drop shoe with minimal stability features; nice improvement in upper stability due to overlays)
