About this deal

The Texas-based brand offers a number of products outside of its core fire pit lineup, including pizza ovens, patio heaters, camp stoves and an array of accessories, but when most people say "Solo Stove," they're referring to fire pits. But there isn't just one definitive fire pit made by the brand — Solo Stove makes a number of different models in various sizes to suit different needs and situations. So if you've been wondering about different Solo Stove sizes and wondering which of the brand's fire pits to get, here's what you need to know. Mesa XL does not use a pellet adapter. Instead, it uses a Duel Fuel grate that can be accommodate both Mini Firewood and Solo Stove Premium Wood Fuel Pellets.

Getting an maintaining a consistent flame is difficult and I would recommend wood pellets over firewood for this reason. It's easier to add more at a consistent rate and creates a more consistent fire. I narrowed my search down to the Mesa and Mesa XL and opted for the Mesa in the end. However, my research showed that they’re both fantastic fire pits but it all depends on your fire pit needs. The Mesa is very simple to operate, although those using firewood must first prep the pieces to be no more than 5 inches long. Use fine, dry tinder to start the fire inside the Mesa, adding kindling to strengthen the flame. Once the fire gets going, start adding the larger pieces. Add more as needed, being careful not to smother the fire. Portability: Both the Mesa and the Mesa XL are designed with portability in mind. However, due to its larger size, the Mesa XL might be slightly less convenient to transport than the more compact Mesa. If you plan to take your fire pit on camping trips or to different outdoor locations frequently, the Mesa might be a better option in terms of ease of transportation.

The Mesa tabletop fire pit is dual fuel. You can use wood pellets, biofuel made from compressed wood fiber, or regular well-seasoned firewood. I found it harder to find small enough pieces of traditional firewood to fit into the Mesa, but I did have plenty of smaller twigs and branches, pruned from my landscape, for use in the fire pit. For wood pellets, there is no adapter required. The Mesa XL has an integrated dual-fuel grate that can accommodate both types of fuel. For more options, see our full buyer’s guide on The Best Tabletop Fire Pits . What is the Solo Stove Mesa XL? Mesa XL has implemented a new Dual Fuel grate that can accommodate both Solo Stove Mini Oak Firewood as well as Solo Stove Premium Wood Fuel Pellets, no adapter needed.

Solo Stove Mesa XL Tabletop Fire Pit Specifications:

Both of these Mesa models operate like Solo’s larger pits. The tabletop fire pits feature a double wall with two sets of burn holes—exterior burn holes are at the bottom, and the interior burn holes are at the top. This burn hole placement is the foundation of Solo’s 360° Airflow technology, which allows superheated air to travel to the upper burn holes and shoot out to burn off smoke, thereby providing a smokeless fire. On spec, there aren’t many differences — which is why it’s interesting Solo Stove took the time to make the Mesa in a second size. But at the end of the day, head to head, it all comes down to burn time. This makes it super convenient to take hiking and have a little fire without having to have an open pit fire. It also makes it easy to take to friends houses or to my partner's house. In addition to having to reload your Mesa more often you also need to use the included pellet adaptor if you want to use wood pellets with it. This makes the space smaller and so using pellets and wood combined is difficult.

Mesa’s pellet adapter should be used any time you plan on burning pellets to allow for optimal airflow, continuous safety, and consistent heat. The Mesa and Mesa XL tabletop fire pits both have the same basic design with 360° airflow and durable stainless steel construction. Producing very little smoke, they come in various colors and have stands and a carry case.
