at first they were just kinda teammates in the assasin game and were just “messing” around with each other, but then the feelings appeared and bluh bluh bluh. The lovely romance, big, beautiful family and all of the summer feels won me over and I can’t WAIT to read more from this author.
I found myself wanting to live inside the pages, totally enamoured by Meredith’s family, the romance (THE ROMANCE! What I loved above all else was the MOST AMAZING summer vacation game – truly, I’m not exaggerating. The Summer of Broken Rules has warmth, humor, tons of Taylor Swift song references, and of course a dreamy love interest, with mourning a loss adding to the emotional range. I agree on everything and also that they fell in love REALLY fast, but as you said, that worked in this story. About the book: Meredith Fox has been going to Martha’s Vineyard for the summer as long as she can remember.
like girl, u just broke up with the guy u were for 4 motherfucking years and 7 days later u already in love with another one? Every summer, Meredith’s family vacations in Martha’s Vineyard and I kind of want to experience summer on this little Massachusetts island now, with the sandy trails, all of Meredith’s family houses, the bike rides, the beach and the pond and everything else. And as the week progresses, she realizes she's not only at risk of losing the game, but also her heart. And a gigantic SHOUT OUT to my friend Kat for gifting me this book and knowing exactly the kind of stories I fall for. You open it and you’re suddenly transported into this summery, wonderfully warm setting and you don’t ever want to leave it. The writing style was also lacking- there was too many setting descriptions and not enough sophistication. Although The Summer of Broken Rules demonstrates the whirlwind plot characteristic of a modern-day romance novel, it also tackles a variety of much more serious topics, the most prominent of which focuses on the death of a family member and the various ways in which family members collectively process their grief.
Meredith isn't sure she's ready to go back to the annual tradition of a week on the island without her sister, but a family wedding on the island this summer is a good reason to try. and okay, i could close my eyes if there at least was some build up, but there wasn’t and for me the build up of a relationship is the main thing in romance books. the summer love aspect >>> like i think the author took the premise of meeting someone and not being able to stay away SO WELL. Individual minor characters are African American, Creole, adopted from Central America, and another has a South Asian-sounding name.
It will all be overwhelming, but even more since since the entire extended family will be together for her cousin’s big wedding.
let me tell you, everyone is SO dramatic about this game that when someone is eliminated they take videos of it and make fun of the eliminated person, literally start debates if that kill can be counted according to rules… they are literally scared to go outside bc they are afraid to be eliminated. grow up what is this, i can’t imagine saying that to my best friend- and the fact that meredith thinks luli never apologises so it’s okay? We’re Marie (she/her) and Nyx (she/her), two sisters screaming about books at each other and now with you, too.Despite these difficulties, Wit is attentive and affectionate and represents everything that Meredith wants in a romantic partner. Personally, I didn’t find the characters to actually be immature at all, which I found refreshing in a young adult book. i’ve been picking up and putting down a bunch of contemporaries lately and have been feeling a bit burned out but this sounds exactly up my alley – time to check if my library has a copy so i can dive right in! In this story, they’re reuniting to celebrate a wedding and… well, let’s just say: there are A LOT of people to keep track of. claire; even though she wasn’t in the book the way meredith and her family think and talk about her is so beautiful, you can understand how an incredible person she was.
