All of these medications are available on prescription or over the counter from the pharmacist or local supermarket. It is usually safe to fly 4-6 weeks after stoma surgery. After abdominal surgery things can take time to settle down – there is a recovery period where you need to be cautious, so it is important not to take any unnecessary risks. Make sure that you take appropriate travel insurance with appropriate cover for your condition. Some people may need to have treatment whilst abroad and which might need to be arranged in advance, such as dialysis. It is important to declare any health conditions and your stoma to your travel insurance company so that they can provide the right level of cover for you. You must disclose any medical history, surgery and any pre-existing conditions.

A change in climate, water or food can upset your bowels, so be prepared. As a precaution for diarrhoea, it is advisable to take Loperamide (Imodium) with you which slows down the bowel’s activity, and sachets of rehydration powder (Dioralyte or Rehydrate) which easily dissolves in water to replace lost body salts, reducing the risk of dehydration. If you are at the airport with plenty of time to spare, change your pouch before you board the plane. If not, certainly empty the contents before you board.

Try to divide the load between bags. There is no need to inform anyone on the flight that you have a stoma, but if you feel it would help you, then do let the cabin crew know so they can support you.Calculate the number of bags you would normally need for each day of your holiday – and double it, with a few extras! The change in climate and environment may mean more bag changes are needed.
