Description

Contrary to popular belief, cat hair itself is not allergenic. The cause of allergy to cats is a protein called Fel d 1 emanating from sebum found in the sebaceous glands of cats. The protein attaches itself to dried skin, called dander, that flakes off and floats through the air when cats wash themselves. Although you may never be able to eliminate all your allergy symptoms, following these suggestions can help make living with your cat a more enjoyable experience. Whilst most kitchens and bathrooms feature hard floorings such as tiles or laminate, the cozier areas of the home are usually kitted out with a soft, fluffy carpet. This may look aesthetically pleasing and feel lovely on your feet, but it is a prime ground for pet allergens to gather. Sheila Farhang, M.D., is a double-fellowship trained board-certified dermatologist, reconstructive skin cancer (Mohs micrographic) surgeon, and cosmetic surgeon in Tucson, TX. She has authored numerous publications in top dermatology journals and is considered a media expert by the American Academy of Dermatology. What to Look for in a Facial Cleansing Brush Bristle Type Along with microscopic allergens found in their dander, saliva and urine these allergens become become dry and airborne. If you're sensitised to them you can suffer an allergic reaction when you breathe them in. If you do not use a vacuum that is designed for pets, you run the risk of merely spreading those particles around the home as opposed to removing them completely.

Treat your dog once a week to keep the allergen down to an acceptable level. If you have pet-allergic guests coming to stay use Petal Cleanse on your dog for at least 2 weeks and preferably 3 weeks before they come.

Why You are Allergic to Your Pet

Of course, the health and safety of the cat is the priority, but the solution is perfectly safe for use and won’t cause any adverse reactions for the animal.

After a few weeks, we had to tell the Cats Protection team that we would have to rehome them, which was heartbreaking. They were very understanding and told me that they had found another lovely home for them, but I was so disappointed I couldn’t have cats in my life! Any allergen-containing dander in your home won’t go anywhere by itself. Whilst cleaning is a significant activity when you have pets, especially pets that cause you an allergic reaction, aerating the home is just as, if not even more essential. It is sometimes suggested that choosing a particular breed of cat will lessen the likelihood of an allergy, but both Allergy UK and Cats Protection say that as far as is known there are no truly non-allergenic cat breeds. Some individual cats seem to produce less of the Fel d 1 protein but it’s not really possible to predict which ones. Female cats are supposed to produce less of the protein than males, and neutered males less than entire tom-cats — but nothing is guaranteed. Eliminate allergen traps such as upholstered furniture and rugs. Carpet can accumulate up to 100 times the amount of cat allergens as hardwood flooring. If ripping up the carpet is not an option, have it steam cleaned as often as needed.

But now there's a solution to the heartbreaking prospect of having to re-house your beloved pet - simply wipe your dog once a week with PetalCleanse. Wipe the dander away with a special product such as Petal Cleanse. This is a lotion composed of cleansers and moisturisers. The cleansers remove the dander saliva and urine from the coat, and encapsulate the Fel d1 allergens. The moisturisers condition the coat and skin to further reduce the amount of material shed. Tests have shown that Petal Cleanse alleviated the symptoms of 90% of sufferers. Bathing a cat is often suggested as a way to reduce the dander, but the cat would have to be washed almost daily for this to be effective, which is not practical and far too stressful for both cat and owner. Investigate some of the recently developed products for your cat such as Petal Cleanse, an anti-allergy coat cleaner which is approved by Allergy UK, Cats Protection, and the RSPCA. Owners are recommended to brush or comb their cat thoroughly first to remove loose hair, then apply the cleaner to the cat’s fur on a damp cloth before drying it with a towel. A once-a-week treatment is advised and the manufacturers say that if you don’t see an improvement in your symptoms after three weeks, you should consult your GP. One of the most common mistakes that people make when trying to allergen-proof their home is omitting to pay attention to the floor.

To eliminate this problem, you can brush your cat outdoors if the weather permits. However, if there is a sudden downpour – neither you nor your cat will want to sit out so relocating to a garage or other building that is separate from the main home is a good option. Segregating the animal will give you a safe space to go to when your allergies become too much. This may sound a lot more dramatic than it is since doing this could be as simple as keeping just one room in the home completely cat free. Additionally, it pays to think about the number of soft furnishings you keep in areas where you allow your feline companion to go. For example, if the cat is permitted to enter the living room, it can pay to minimize the number of cushions, throws, and curtains – opting for blinds may be preferable. All of these items are just as guilty as your carpet for harboring those allergens and giving you symptoms every time you simply want to sit in the comfort of your living room. If you suffer from allergies relating to your cat, it can be a sage idea to remove your carpets and go for a hard floor option. When your cat washes itself, this protein becomes attached to the hair, dried skin particles, and saliva, and spreads easily into the environment. For most people, this causes no problems. For those who have an allergic response, symptoms soon appear. These may be relatively mild or quite severe, and can include red, itchy, watery eyes; a runny nose; sneezing; breathing difficulties; and a skin rash. Hay fever sufferers and those who have allergic asthma are especially at risk of cat allergy, although it can develop in others too. The particles that you are trying to get rid of are incredibly small and notoriously difficult to shift. Still, with regular vacuuming and washing of any soft furnishings, it is possible. In addition to how well it works to remove makeup, she noted how much she liked the soft bristles, saying that they weren’t too abrasive on her sensitive skin. Something really unique about this particular facial cleansing brush is that it connects to an app specifically designed to use in combination with the tool. She expressed that it was really cool to have visual guidance while cleansing, and the app shares the ideal amount of time you should spend cleansing each part of your face, but our tester said it definitely took some work to figure out how to change the settings and customize the app to her liking. Independently tested and trialled and approved as an allergy-friendly product by Allergy UK, PetalCleanse has been proved safe for pets and humans and found effective in reducing symptoms in over 97% of pet allergic people.
