Description

Greek nationalism, otherwise referred to as Hellenic nationalism, refers to the nationalism of Greeks and Greek culture. [1] As an ideology, Greek nationalism originated and evolved in classical Greece. [2] [3] [4] In modern times, Greek nationalism became a major political movement beginning in the early 19th century, which culminated in the Greek War of Independence (1821–1829) against the Ottoman Empire. [1] Throughout the 19th century, the Greek flag underwent several changes, both in shape and color. The cross was modified, and the color of the flag was changed to a deeper blue. The current design, which features a blue and white cross on a field of blue, was adopted in 1978. Colors Of The Greek Flag Parades, the crux of the day’s celebrations, fill the streets across the country. The grandest spectacles unfold in Thessaloniki and Athens, where children of all ages, clad in matching uniforms, march from Zappeion to Akadimias Street. The procession passes by the Parliament at Syntagma Square, paying homage to the Unknown Soldier monument and the countless souls who laid down their lives for their country. The streets and balconies brim with spectators, their hands fervently waving Greek flags. In that vein, a somewhat anglocentric view of the world is betrayed when Jones laments that Keats was not rich enough to visit Greece and see the marbles, while not seeming all that concerned with the millions of people – poets among them, I’m sure – from Greece, or anywhere else for that matter, who will never be able to afford to “expand their horizons” by travelling to the world museum, which just happens to be in London. The more interesting and demanding question, however, is: If a nation takes its dignity seriously (as it should), how are the nation's institutions organized so that the country is able to prosper and distinguish itself in, say, science, the arts, spots, etc.? And if the country has fallen in hard times, as Greece has in the last five years, how does the country protect its dignity effectively?

A Day of Reverence and Celebration

The centre-right Greek government, following groundbreaking legislation implemented by its leftwing predecessor – including civil unions for same-sex couples – had announced a 2021-25 national strategy for LGBTQI+ equality and, for the first time, placed openly gay individuals in official posts. As a member of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles who recently argued (and happily won) against Jonathan Jones at the UCL debate which he mentions in his recent article ( Let’s not lose our marbles over the British Museum boss’s remarks, 29 January), I presumptuously assume I am included in his description of “the passionate proponents of Greece’s claim”. He goes on to say that people such as myself “need to explain how their argument differs from any other variety of nationalist populism”. I thought I had done just that at UCL, but I shall do so again in case he missed my point. pride Boutaris has supported the Thessaloniki Pride festival since its inception in 2012. He even posed nude for a magazine, saying the event, which draws tourists from across the Balkans and neighboring Turkey, was a boon for Thessaloniki. "We have a duty as a democratic society to recognize diversity," he said. He added that there are also economic advantages to the festival: "It is one of the biggest events to be held in northern Greece. The hotels are full.
