Oh and the author of Sweetbitter wrote an equally racially insensitive introduction to this book, so at least the one thing Black Swans added to my life was providing me with the best reason to take Sweetbitter off my TBR list.

Counterpoint Press has issued two others, Sex and Rage, a novel, and Black Swans, a book of stories. Black Swans is a collection of nine stories that look back on the 1980s—a decade of dreams, drink, and stoned youth turning Republican. Coverage of Babitz tends to characterize the author as a footnote to the men in her life — the god-daughter of Igor Stravinsky, the nude girl playing chess with Marcel Duchamp in Julian Wasser’s famous photo.Painfully and wonderfully vain, Black Swans is filled to the brim with nostalgia for, you know, Hollywood baby! Jim Morrison is dead in Paris, Babitz has given up drugs and drinking, and the nine stories collected here are reminiscent. A couple working as chauffeurs have been accused of stealing millions from the founder of Tin House Books.

Sex and Rage is a romp with substance--just beyond the descriptions of drinks and parties and devastating one-liners is a sweet story of a bright but messy young woman, making her own way. A twice nominated Forward Prize nominee and Hawthornden Fellow, Mary-Jane has won the Bridport, Martin Starkie, Dromineer, Reflex Fiction and Mslexia prizes, and International Bedford Poetry competition as well as being shortlisted and commended for many more including the Beverley International Prize for Literature 2020, The Troubadour and Oxford Brookes Poetry prize.

A., but it really takes one to know one, and Babitz, (the wise Hollywood High grad), is sly, wry and sometimes surprisingly vulnerable. since these are based on her real-life experiences, i would probably run away if i met someone like her in real life. A new reissue of Babitz's collection of nine stories that look back on the 1980s and early 1990s-decades of dreams, drink, and glimpses of a changing world.

I was mildly interested to learn about the 80s but the stories kept dragging into Eve's unenthusiastic dating life and her nonchalant attitude towards everything.Babitz takes readers along for the ride: nights on the Sunset Strip with Coco showing up all the other girls by rocking a suede mini dress, her dedication to heavy duty contouring with Max Factor contrary to Babitz’s warning that men didn’t like “pancake makeup,” her cycles through hair colors, jobs, husbands. Police brutality, tense race relations, and disenchantment with the false veneer of progress are contemporary concerns, though Babitz’s light, palliating tone is not . Black Swans, originally out in 1993 and reissued this year, is the best example of what makes her writing so essential.
