After doing this, the 105, like most whiskies, has transformed. However the change has been profound with this particular whisky. The nose is... sharp! It has almost a vinegarry sharpness but without nastiness. I feel my bottle badly needs to wake up. I did a side-by-side comparison of an older 15 year old Glenfarclas (bottled in 2006) and a contemporary bottle, same expression, and the difference in nose, palate, and even colour in the glass was stark. Spoiler alert: the older bottling won on all three counts. Hazelnuts, leather, dried dark fruit, cocoa, dried orchard fruit, citrus peels, butterscotch, copper, and strawberry shortcake.

Really interesting, bold whisky. One glass will do, not a session whisky. But I love it. So much going on. Energetic, heady, rich. Wakes up the palate and demands to be heard. The marshmallow note is uncanny and overpowers the rest of the dram at points, but overall this regains its footing, albeit with a somewhat abbreviated finish. All in, a step up from the 12 year old expression and solid value for money. Score: 7/10

Sip this one slowly, savoring it in your mouth, and studying the aroma. Each time, experiment with different water proportions and glassware. This is a worthy dram that will reward your patience and attention. Giving it time in the glass and just a wee bit of water really brings out this lovely dram. It can be tasted neat (which I rarely do with at such abv) but it's really nice and nothing like it's 15 year old brother. Drinkers and enthusiasts rant and rave about the “Top 10 Best Sherry Bombs” or claim the best whisky in the world can be categorised as a “Sherry Bomb.” But what is a Sherry Bomb? Well I’ve seen them described as “whiskies that are matured either exclusively or for the majority of their maturation period in sherry casks (most often mostly first-fill).” An additional caveat would be that some are cask strength, but this is not always the case. Overall A great intro to NAS, Cask Strength and Glenfarclas. I can safely say this 105 from Glenfarclas still sets and maintains a high standard. For a family-owned business like Glenfarclas it makes sense for them to do this right and keep doing it right. A great value-for-money, cask strength sherried, quality introductory dram from Glenfarclas. Haven’t got any bad Glenfarclas ever. Simple as that. I especially love the 105′ because of its higher strength and the – for glenfarclas normally being straight simple but classic in design questions – outstanding design. Reminds me of the 185th anniversary bottling. Awesome dram. You hit it with this one. I haven’t had a bottle for ‘yonks’ (donkeys years) but can still remember nose and taste. Lovely stuff. Slight grapey notes if memory serves.

Fruity, nutty, sherried profile. What’s not to like about this? Some might say the proof (120), but that’s easily fixed with a splash of water if it’s too much. Others might say the price, but then all whisky is expensive these days, and it’s only getting more so. So I ask again… what’s not to like? The 105 doesn't carry an age statement presently, making it rare among Glenfarclas bottlings. Although, there are suggestions that it is matured for 8-10 years in a combination of both ex-sherry and ex-bourbon barrels.
