Description

Cultural attractions in the Citadel include the Folklore Museum, which presents traditional costumes and crafts of Gozo Island; and the Old Prison used by the Knights of Saint John in the 16th century (the cells are covered in prisoner's graffiti). See Great Walks Malta for a map, trail notes and information on other recommended walks. Around five days are needed for the 50km (30-mile) Gozo Coastal Walk. Marfa Peninsula Best for watchtower history and views of Comino This Marian shrine is the most important pilgrimage church on the Maltese Islands. With its 47-meter campanile, the Basilica of Ta' Pinu stands as a beacon of faith in a remote valley between the villages of Ghammar and Gharb. Clifftop trails can sometimes be exposed to high winds, so take extra care on these routes during gusty weather. The village has a lavish Baroque Parish Church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. The ornate interior features marvelous ceiling paintings, gilded Corinthian columns, and an airy dome with stained-glass windows.

Mġarr ix-Xini tower, one of the coastal towers built by the Knights in Gozo. Entrance to the tower can be arranged upon appointment. Fortifications Interpretation Centre | Parliament house | Lascaris war rooms | Casa Rocca Piccola | The Malta Experience | Fort St. Elmo & The War Museum Have a look at two of Tony’s apartments in Mellieħa and rent directly from the owner. He’s one of the few holiday let owners in the area I recommend:

Follow route markers – in different colors for different walks – and avoid shortcuts as many fields are privately owned. Signs marked "RTO" ("Riservato") indicate private property. Comminotto covers 0.25 square kilometres (0.1 square miles). The island is 100 meters northwest of Comino. Ta' Pinu Basilica, situated in open countryside is an important place of pilgrimage as miracles are claimed to have occurred here. The interior of the Basicila is rich in decoration. One can enjoy views of open countryside from outside the church. The Azure Window. The Azure Window was a cliff outcropping with a hole in the middle. It collapsed on March 2017. Marsaxlokk village with all its road names. If you intend going for some time it is good to keep a copy on your mobile where it shows the tourist office, the bank with an ATM, the sandy beach, pedestrian area where here you find the daily market and the numerous restaurants along the promenade. Toilets facilities and Wifi are located in the central area adjacent to the promenade.

Marsalforn - a popular seaside summer resort north west coast of Gozo and mostly deserted during the rest of the year. The famous salt pans are located here.Several bays provide harbours along the rugged coast of the islands. Besides, Malta has several natural ports where the water is deep enough to anchor. The Grand Harbour is one of them. It explains why Valletta has been of such strategic importance throughout history. Strategic Location in the Past and Now The present flag of Malta was adopted on September 21, 1964. The flag’s design is bicolor, consisting of two vertical bands of white and red. The flag has the representation of George Cross edged in red on the upper hoist-side corner of the white band. Malta Location Mellieħa is known for its natural surroundings and particularly its (mostly) sandy beaches. Apart from the largest sandy beach that Malta offers, Mellieħa Bay, you can also easily get to Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa (my personal favourite beach). Also nearby, to the North of Mellieħa Bay, you can find Armier Bay, Little Armier Bay and White Tower Bay. More info further down in this article: Beaches around Mellieħa. Take a day trip to Gozo or Comino

Further down the road from Armier and Little Armier, there’s another small sandy beach called White Tower Bay. Mostly frequented by locals (and temporary summer residents who park a caravan or own a so-called boathouse there), it’s another more secluded option. You will find a restaurant at the end of the beach. Slugs Bay To arrive in Gozo, you have to take the ferry from Cirkewwa on the Island of Malta to the seaport of Mgarr on the Island of Gozo. You can then hop on the local buses (and taxis) to get around the island. Buses run less frequently than on Malta, but it's easier than renting a car. Gozo bus drivers know how to navigate the island's hairpin turns and narrow one-lane roads. And if you need to go up to Ċirkewwa to catch the Gozo ferry, you need to hop on bus number 41 or 42.

The Azure Window, the Inland Sea and the Blue Hole all make going to the spectacular west coast of Gozo very worthwhile. In contrast to Xlendi and Marsalforn this place has been spared from development and makes an unusual and picturesque place to swim. The beach surrounding the lake is unfortunately made of pebbles but there are a few piers and terraces in front of the fishermen's boathouses one can also use. The Blue Hole is not a true blue hole in the geological sense but still makes an amazing spot to dive, having won awards as one of the most beautiful diving spots of Europe. One80 Kitchen & Lounge – Further up the hill towards the village, this restaurant is renowned for serving high-quality cuisine, whether in the modern dining room or on the terrace offering panoramic views. The immense fortified ramparts of golden stone glow a pinkish-ochre hue in the afternoon light. From the three bastions (semicircular battlements) of the Citadel, you can take in panoramic views of the Gozo countryside. The landscape is dotted with villages in the hills and valleys all the way to the sea. Within the Citadel is a maze of winding streets and narrow alleyways. You will find white taxis also on the island of Gozo however these tend to be more expensive. It is suggested to prebook your taxi or airport transfer with a local company.
