As for the UI of Tizen, it’s a pretty clean look. Pressing the home button brings up an overlay along the bottom of the screen with your frequently used apps and sources as well as the settings and Ambient Mode. Ambient Mode, more or less, is a lower power mode that helps the TV blend into its surrounding environment while retaining some key information – like the time – up on the screen. It’s been around for a few years now and is still an interior decorator’s dream come true. The Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV is part of the Samsung 2021 TV lineup that also includes the Samsung QN85A, Samsung QN80A, Samsung Q70A and Samsung Q60A 4K QLED TVs as well the Samsung QN700A, Samsung QN800A and Samsung QN900A 8K TVs. It was unveiled at the virtual CES 2021 and became available in the US and UK a short time later. It’s currently unavailable in Australia, where instead you can get the similar QN85A. A dedicated Game Hub groups cloud gaming services, including Xbox Game Pass, Utomik and Twitch, and connected consoles together. There’s also a UI overlay which features all the key game settings (accessed via a long press on the Play/Pause button), including input lag, VRR and HDR info.While all four HDMI inputs support High Frame Rate sources, only HDMI 3 is eARC enabled. There’s also an optical digital output, Ethernet, two USB ports and a CI card slot. Wireless connectivity covers Bluetooth and dual band Wi-Fi. There’s a choice of terrestrial or dual satellite tuner feeds. The set’s audio performance is extremely good, especially given how discrete the drivers are. There are six channels at play here, two of which are placed top rear. QN: This relates to the range – QN being the company’s Neo QLED range. S represents the QD-OLED range. As much a smart home hub as a streaming TV platform, the Tizen platform provides a plethora of features. There has been a slight redesign this season, with some downsized icons, but ease of navigation and versatility remain high. The good news is that you can actually go in and tweak the judder and stutter individually through Samsung’s picture settings and we highly recommend doing so.

What’s more, despite the sophistication of its processing engine and lighting system, the QE50QN90B manages to get the time it takes to render images in its Game mode down to a hugely impressive 9.6ms (with 1080p/60Hz signals). Samsung’s Game Bar does, though, provide the option to sacrifice a bit of screen response speed in return for better, processing-assisted picture quality, along with other game-related adjustments such as the ability to raise the brightness of dark areas without impacting the rest of the picture so that you can more easily see enemies lurking in the dark. All of the QE50QN90B’s high-end picture features are marshalled by the latest version of Samsung’s Neo Quantum 4K video processor, complete with improved upscaling and the accumulated knowledge of numerous neural networks that have been busy crunching through countless image types in Samsung’s labs to develop a vast database of picture optimisation shortcuts. It wasn’t as bad as the Sony X950H that we lambasted last year for its shakiness, but it’s still much less stable than we’d like.
