You may have come across the term rubbing compound too. This lies in between. It’s more aggressive than polish but finer than cutting compound. Rubbing compound is what we would recommend to most people who need something with a little more oomph than their standard car polish without going overboard. Should you use cutting compound? A metal cutting paste or cutting fluid should be used when cutting or drilling metal. The primary reason is to offset or reduce the inevitable build up of heat. Heat is generateddue to both friction and energy lost whilst deforming the material. As air cooling alone is unlikely to be sufficient to prevent heat build up in both the tool and the work surface a drilling lubricant is required. Because excessive temperature can ruin the temper of the drill bit or the item being drilled it is important to prevent this happening. After cutting and pasting the text, "Example cut text" should only be in the bottom box. Cutting compounds are abrasive paintwork products and may not be suitable to use on all cars. For minor paintwork issues like light swirl marks and dull colour, you may be better starting off with car polish.

Polycrystalline Diamond PasteThe particles in this paste has sharper angles and are more jagged in shape making polycrystalline diamond Paste suitable for polishing more challenging surfaces Following the application of polish, you should buff the paintwork with a clean pad or towel and then add a protective layer of wax or sealant. Adding a protective layer is extremely important. Failing to do so will result in your hard work being undone in a jiffy as soon as the paintwork is exposed to sun, weather, and debris. Cutting compound vs polish

Cutting paste tested for extreme pressure properties

Diamond paste is a water-based polishing compound that is used for polishing the surfaces of many types of materials including stone, metal, ceramic, gemstones and glass. The paste consists of microscopic diamond particles (diamonds being the hardest natural material around) that act as an abrasive to scrub, smooth and polish surfaces. A diamond paste can also be used to clean surfaces, as, due to its consistency it can get into small grooves to remove dirt. Diamond paste is supplied in tubes or dispensing syringes for accurate dispensing. Benefits of Using Diamond Paste In most circumstances, cutting compound is not needed. A regular polish will serve you well. It’ll get rid of light swirls or scratches and make your car shine. There are 10 colours to choose from and we found a grey which matched both the Land Rover and the modern metallic of the Nissan. It goes on to the paint easily but it struggled to ‘bite’ on our new paintwork. With some elbow grease it did manage to bring a shine on the dull paint and seemed to work reasonably well on the Nissan’s minor scratches too, but we are not convinced the colour of the liquid actually made any difference. Trying it on a patch of the Land Rover’s white roof paint didn’t change the colour or fill the scratches with grey, so we remain sceptical. Rubbing compound can be applied by hand with a cloth or circular applicator pad, or with a polishing machine using a wool pad. Easier to use than sandpaper or polishing tools Can polish surfaces of all shapes and sizes Fine consistency smooth away smallest of scratches Fluid consistency leaves smooth and even finish Works rapidly on all surfaces Suitable for use on delicate surfaces for scratch-free results Consistent, repeatable polishing results Types of Diamond Paste

Speed up the drilling process. The reduction in tool wear and heat build up will allow for a faster drilling experience. For best results, apply polish to restore shine and then apply a good quality wax to seal in the paintwork and maintain the shine. If you want to use a cutting compound to remove scratches and swirl marks in the paint, here’s what to do. Bear in mind that this works best on light, shallow scratches that are only in the top clearcoat. CUT-IT is a high quality metal lubricant and cutting paste suitable for reaming, tapping, drilling and metal forming and is suitable for all metals. For threaded pipes carrying hot or cold water, gases, steam, air, petrol, oils and refrigerants. Solvent and water-free, contains teflon and PTFE. Brushes on oily, wet or cold threads. Disassembles easily. Will not dry out or harden. These shortcuts now work in Windows 10's Command Prompt, too. Unlike the original T-Cut, the Colour Fast claims to have ‘3-in-1’ ability which takes away the surface layer of paint, fills scratches with a coloured compound and then applies a layer of protective wax. The instructions insist the H9.01 is only designed for use with a machine, but it was effective when applied by hand too. Apply a small amount of cutting compound to the wool pad of the machine polisher. Apply this to the paint surface using light, steady strokes Paintwork on modern cars consists of three layers. The first is the primer, the second is the colour coat, and the final outer layer is the clear protective coat. Minor scratches to car paintwork occur on this outer clear coat and that’s where cutting compound can be useful. Once the above steps are completed, the text is moved into a temporary area called the clipboard. To paste that text, move the cursor to where you want to paste, and do any of the following:

The best cutting paste for you will largely depend on what you need it to do and how much you are willing to spend. The Koch Chemie and Angelwax are expensive enough to put the occasional user off, but we’d be tempted to put them on our birthday list as they do such a good job and take a lot of the effort out of getting a decent finish. It’s also important to point out that deep scratches and paint chips that penetrate through the clear coat and into the colour coat or primer can’t be fixed with cutting compound. This kind of damage requires reapplying primer, colour, and clear coat either yourself or employing a professional. How to use cutting compound There are plenty of cutting compounds for sale. The main difference between products is how abrasive they are. Here are a few popular compounds: Car polishing compound is similar to cutting compound but much less abrasive. It removes the top layers of wax and build-up to restore a glossy shine to the paint. It doesn’t remove layers of paint.
