A little colour went a long way, and without the fragments I’d been expecting; the pigments dissolved completely into the water. It occurred to me this would be a handy way to take colours travelling or hiking with minimum weight. The leads are strong enough to be sharpened to a very fine point without breaking, yet soft enough to be sensitive to the slightest pressure on paper and they glide across the surface in a very pleasing way. Watercolour Pencils let you combine the very best of your drawing and painting techniques – all in one tool. Incredibly versatile, they’re capable of making the same dry marks as a standard colouring pencil, but with a touch of water they’ll turn into rich washes. In this blog post we’ll take a look at our whole range of water soluble coloured pencils and compare their properties side by side to help you find the best pencil for your work. A range of Swiss made pencils: the Museum Aquarelle pencils are made in our Caran d'Ache workshop in Switzerland, in partnership with watercolor artists. You can also lift colour directly from the lead – like you would a traditional watercolour pan. However, this will weaken the lead, making it harder to sharpen or draw with. It can also cause water to leech into the wooden barrel and will affect the useable life of your pencil. You can use Watercolour Pencils with all kinds of techniques (from top left to bottom right): shavings activated with water, wet nib on dry paper, wet splatter on dry paper, wet nib on wet paper, wash made from wet on wet splatter and strokes activated with water. Caran d’Ache have aimed this product at the professional user, and the reasoning behind that isn’t mere marketing hype. Water-soluble pencils are a fun and dynamic way to create unique effects in your artwork using a single medium. Caran D’Ache’s offering in this product space is the Museum Aquarelle Watercolour Pencils. While not an entry-level product based on price alone, the company’s products are known to be worth every penny. I have long been a diehard fan of the Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer Watercolour Pencils but these pencils have intrigued me for a long time. Could these pencils possibly dethrone my long time favourites? Read on…They’re so pigmented, and cheaper than premium watercolour, I just snapped the leads off into a couple of tiny ceramic palettes (got two of the Etchr 37 well travel ones for this). Have to say they’re easier to travel with this way than tube paints. (Read somewhere a Museum pencil has same amount of pigment as a half pan.) And yes sometimes I’m so lazy I just use them at home to do a bit of painting on the dining table to finish up the sketches. In fact they’re still set up this way this morning (sheepish shrug). If you’d like to try this range of pencils, you can try a basic set of 12. We have analysed the small set, and provide colour swatches, and the colour recipes of 144 colours that you can make from the basic set. You can see the 144 Museum colour recipes here. Make your own colour chart

The lightfast properties, too, are beyond impressive. Of the 76 colours in the range, 61 have a maximum score of five stars on the Blue Wool Scale, assuring at least 100 years of stability in normal room conditions, whether applied wet or dry. Spraying, brushing, or dropping water on to Museum Aquarelle pencil marks resulted in a host of effects, depending on the water-to-pigment ratio and the relationship between colours on the paper. For a pretty marbled finish, I scattered tiny shavings from the leads of different colours on to the paper and then brushed over with plenty of water, letting the colours mingle.Highly resistant to light : the Museum Aquarelle pencils are light-resistant, guaranteeing the durability of your watercolor works of art. However, it takes a long time to make your own chart, and it’s usually something we don’t get around to doing. If you’ve made your own charts – that’s great. But – as is practical, you might also have your charts in one physical place while you draw in another. You need to have access to the colours where you are – hopefully you’ll be there with internet access and your mobile device.

For Frank the Suffolk punch and his handler Pete I made a palette as described, and applied a couple of layers of colour with a brush. Colored pencils for professional artists: the Museum Aquarelle colored pencils are first and foremost adapted to the needs of professional and demanding artists. Watercolour Pencils are made similarly to a standard colouring pencil. They have the same wooden barrels that encase a coloured lead. Each lead is made from the same kinds of ingredients as a coloured pencil, but with the added benefit of a water-soluble binder. This binder allows you to use watercolour pencils either wet or dry. Use them dry and you’ll be able to apply and blend colour like a traditional pencil. However, their beauty really comes out when you combine them with water. Use a wet brush, mist with a spritzer or spray bottle, or draw directly onto wet paper to create all kinds of interesting marks.

Multi-technique uses: the Museum Aquarelle range is adapted to both watercolor painting and artistic drawing. Shaving the colours on to a fresh wash or plain wet paper was quite an exciting experience as I watched them seem to melt. I used a sharp blade for this, running it at a 45° angle along the lead produced a fine dust, whereas a 90° angle gave me a thin flake. You’ll find this chart helpful as you can find a coloured pencil’s details without having to physically search through your pencils, or your physical colour chart. It will be a great time saver for you. Museum Interactive Colour Chart Used with water the colours can be startlingly intense, which took a little getting used to. I found I was applying too much pencil; just a small amount allows a more subtle watercolour wash effect. Reserve heavier applications for an inky look. Individual colours are not given a lighfastness rating as they are part of the company’s hobby range, however Faber-Castell say the whole range has excellent lightfastness.

Extra-fine quality pencils: the Museum Aquarelle pencils are of exceptional quality and like an extra-fine watercolor. The Caran d’Ache Museum aquarelle watercolour coloured pencil range is vibrant with strong pigment. It is a smaller range than the other Caran d’Ache aquarelle watercolour range Supracolor Soft. The Museum range has 76 pencils. Faber-Castell Albrecht Dürer Watercolour Pencils have a generous colour strip and a good weight in the hand. They’re professional grade, with the majority of colours ranked highly for lightfastness, so they’re an ideal choice for any artist keen on displaying their artwork or taking commissions. You can use these pencils dry, however you’ll find that they have a slightly drier texture than a traditional pencil. Their beauty really shines with the addition of water. It’s remarkably easy to lift the pencil marks, leaving you with nothing but vibrant, pure watercolour paint. Their soft texture also means you can easily blend colours and they have excellent coverage. These pencils have a colour matched, varnished barrel that has all the colour information stamped on for easy identification. When searching for information, first use the global search button. Then use the column searches to refine your search.
