this book is prime blockbuster-film material, as i was left with that particular satisfaction one feels after the last scene in a classic rom-com fades from the screen.

I don’t have a lot in common with Yinka: I’m not British, or Nigerian, or connected to Christianity as she is. Add romantic and professional mishaps, and complicated relationships among four Black women living in England, two of whom are Yinka’s cousins, and you have the makings of comedic gold.

Everything tied up a little too neatly at the end though I very much applaud the rousing speech Yinka gave, giving thanks to her singledom.

I knew it would happen sooner or later and eventually Yinka gets caught out in some of her fibs then everything comes crashing down.

Yinka’s internal struggles to meet the standards and expectations placed on her by everyone else are familiar…. A non-existent man in a non-existent marriage whose whereabouts is often asked about, usually by Nigerian mums and aunties to single British Nigerian women, e. As I mentally decided which man in the story Yinka would end up with and when she’d get a new job, things took a turn. A spellbinding debut novel tracing three generations of a Southern Black family and one daughter’s discovery that she has the power to change her family’s legacy.

Her eventual love interest is very nicely drawn, the friend/family group is great (this is massively a book about the importance of women having one another's backs), and it's a warm-hearted enjoyable read.I find myself comparing books to Bridget Jones's Diary fairly often, just because it's so iconic, but now I think maybe I should've saved the comparison for Yinka.
