Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in. Looking at the gong sets and ensembles of gangsa in the Cordilleres, we are reminded of Vietnam and Indonesia. Even the famous kulintang seems to reflect many traditions of Gamelan ancestors in Indonesia, China and Vietnam. The vocal traditions stand a little outside. Like in every country we find the most “indigenous” aspects in the pieces sung solo or with an instrument. Separations from north to south show two different styles: The northern style uses a special rhythmical pronunciation of vowels and expressive pauses. In the southern style we find melisma, tremoli and long melodic phrases reminding of the Islam singing style. Halle Berry, Gwen Stefani, Tina Fey, Alanis Morissette and Lizzo were all burgeoning flutists in their school days. Even Leonardo da Vinci played the flute! 18. That sounds familiar Occasionally, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, show performances by the Ballet Philippines, the Philippine Madrigal Singers, and the Bayanihan Dance Troupe. World-renowned artists Lea Salonga and Cecile Licad, from time to time, give performances in big concert halls in Manila. The Center of Arts in San Antonio (CASA) in San Miguel, Zambales features violinist Alfonso “Coke” Bolipata and his Pundaquit talents. Other groups that showcase the Filipino performing talents are Repertory Philippines, the Loboc Children’s Choir, and the Amazing Philippines Theatre. [Source: Philippines Department of Tourism] Chinese gongs were little valued: ones from Sangir were worth three or four times as much, and those from Borneo three or four times that—4 or 5 pesos in 1616. Huge ones said to reach a meter and a half in diameter could fetch one or two slaves. The Bornean gong was a standard of value when bargaining for expensive goods—for example, “Pakaagongonta ining katana [Let’s price this Japanese sword] (Sanchez 1617, 9v). Indeed, assessments like pinipito or pinakapito (both referring to the number seven) were understood by themselves to mean seven gongs. =

Another small bone flute is No. 1608 in the Dominion Museum. It is 5⅝ in. long and ⅝ in. in diameter. It has three stops, diminutive holes, and a small hole in the side and near the end. The spaces between the stops are ⅞ and 1⅛ in. No. 826 in the same Museum is 4½ in. long, 11-16 in. in diameter, and has but two stops, which are in the middle of the instrument with a space of ⅞ in. between them. The Dadabuan is an hourglass-shaped drum made of wood with a membrane made water buffalo skin. Decorated with carvings and painted, the drum is part of the Kulintang ensemble. The bass comes with a range of C3-C6, the lowest note an octave below the soprano. This type is rarely seen outside of the flute choir, much less than even the alto. Tanggunggu is set of eight small gongs made of iron, usually hanging on a rest of rope. The lower right gong is played as an ostinato while the melody is played on the other gongs, around the ostinato. Tongkaling brass bells are used as an amulet or as a musical instrument. Fourteen brass bells are fixed to a metal girdle. Nine of these bells have a particular design (a tiger's face). The girdle is used during a particular dance. The Agung gong is made of iron. The gong is part of the Kulintang ensemble Dimensions: diameter: 45 centimeters depth: 21 centimeters. ~ From the beautiful ballets of Tchaikovsky to the musical stylings of pop star Lizzo, the flute is a versatile instrument. We’ll also discover why the flute is the outlier of the woodwind family. The flute is kind of a rebel (you’ll find out why soon!)Shortland mentions thepu torino, koauau and pu tara, remarking:— Different kinds of wind instruments resembling the flute, only varying in their length." This is a rather loose statement, the pu tara or shell trumpet in no way resembles a flute. Small musical instrument A rosewood nose whistle. The player puts one's nose on the upper hole. The air is directed towards the lower edge, where the open mouth makes the sound. Sound of nose whistle Filipinos like karaoke. Karaoke are found in jeepneys and even on some airlines. According to humanbreeds.com: “83 percent of the Filipino women and 72 percent of the Filipino men dream about becoming a famous singer… well, i just made these statistics up, but the actual numbers are probably not so far away from those fake statistics. Filipinos just love singing, not only in the shower, but also on the streets (I’ve seen it happen countless times), in the living room, alone or with friends or of course in the extended and so frequently happening Karaoke sessions. [Source: humanbreeds.com, February 7, 2014] Filipino Artists and Musical Talent The sound is similar to a regular plastic flute but is more versatile because you can make easily glissato and all these without the use of the hands. The life and suffering of Jesus Christ is replayed in many songs and processions called senaculo. These processions are another location for the interaction between Spanish/Catholic and indigenous habits, even in music. As Professor Corazon Canave-Dioquino points out in her article: “The welding of folk traditions and practices into Catholic rituals and celebrations continued. This gave rise to many extra-liturgical music genres, many of which were connected to the church calendar year. Some of these include the Christmas carols and the more elaborate outdoor-re-enactment of the Holy Couple's search for lodging called the pananawagan, panunuluyan, or kagharong.”

The nose flute is similar to the mouth flutes that many westerners are familiar with. The difference is that the nose flute is played exhaling air through the nasal passages. The nose flute’s point of entry is designed with a slanted hole, which effectively divides the flow of air into two streams within the flute’s body. The presence of the two air streams causes a vibration within the nose flute, which results in the production of nose flute sounds.

Philippine traditional musical instruments are commonly grouped into four categories: aerophones, chordophones, membranophones, and idiophones. [1] [2] Aerophones [ edit ] The contrabass is fun to listen to and see. It’s more common than the contralto (or contra’alto), but it’s still only used by a professional-level flutist. Most Filipinos listen to Western pop or Western-influenced Filipino pop. There is little recorded folk music. Indigenous gong and bamboo music, similar to musics found elsewhere in Southeast Asia, has all but disappeared in Manila but can still be found in the countryside, particularly around festival time. Julio Inglesias is popular. Erasurehead is a popular Filipino techno band. As a rule, when flutes were made of human bone, the bones so used were those of enemies. After the slaughter of Marion Du Fresne and his companions, the natives utilised some of their bones where-from to fashion flutes and other objects. Here end Mr. White's notes. The range of the piccolo is from D5-C8. This is the highest of the transverse flutes and usually serves as an accent to the melody in marching bands, advanced wind ensembles, or orchestras.

The contralto is an octave below the alto with a range of G2-G5, similar to a trombone or tenor saxophone. The range is an octave below the bass or two octaves below the soprano at C2-C5. This is closer to the bass trombone but still not as low as the tuba.Mr. White is also responsible for the following:—There was another kind of whio, an inferior kind, made by persons not expert enough to make the better sort. It was used by beginners, persons learning to play, although an expert player alone could make it sound well. This instrument was made from a piece of tutu (Coriaria ruscifolid) the pith of which was removed by means of using a piece of wood as a borer. The outside was then dressed smooth and holes bored as in the one made of matai. These whio made of tupakihi (tutu) were used by children. The following song is one that was much favoured by flute players:— He played some tribal melodies on the flute, which reminded me of the Native American flute music we hear in this country. It wasn't about playing a melody line for several bars, but more like a burst of notes that sounded like birds chirping or the wind whistling. Among the popular handicrafts he has designed are bamboo wind chimes that evoke sounds of the forest and a flowing stream. A Government license permits him to source bamboo directly from the forest. He is also a craft consultant and design trainer.

The Waiapu natives say that, when a flute was fashioned from a piece of houhou (Panax arboreum), that piece was taken from a tree growing in an exposed situation. Piccolo can be translated from Italian to mean small. Another name for the piccolo is the flautino. Aww, that is one of the cutest fun facts about flutes for you there. 8. The modern fluteIn Figs. 77 and 78 (pp. 257, 258) are shown some of these bone instruments from Otago, two of which are broken. The left hand specimen shows but one stop on its exposed side, and the right hand one none at all, possibly it had not been pierced when lost or discarded. A specimen in the Dominion Museum has two stops, with no small hole near the end, but the majority I have seen have three stops, apart from any holes near the end. The range of each instrument is critical to making a good sound with other members of a larger group. The piccolo is the smallest instrument in the flute family. It’s also the flute that creates the highest pitch, an octave higher than a concert flute. Filipino musicians can do credible imitations of American rhythm and blues and country singers and musicians . They are such good imitators they have a phrase for it: “plakang-plaka” , or “sounds just like the recording.”
