Description

One that stood out was the Wine God, Dionysus, and his Bacchantes/Maenads (Wine-maddened/berserker women). The following year, she and her sister Alice went to Germany and were the first women students at the universities of Munich and Leipzich.

She regarded as the high point of her life a 1957 ceremony in which King Paul of Greece named her an honorary citizen of Athens. E sim, tive sempre más notas nas atividades de leitura desde que me lembro - normal já que nunca lia os livros que me impingiam. Mythology succeeds like no other book in bringing to life for the modern reader the Greek, Roman, and Norse myths and legends that are the keystone of Western culture - the stories of gods and heroes that have inspired human creativity from antiquity to the present. My only complaint is that in her effort to make it light reading perhaps, the author avoided the full range of Greek names and other details in the myths, when she should have kept them and even expand on them with a bit of etymology. There is about a page of rambling prose in the introduction in which the words "myth", "religion" and "Nature" appear together prominently, but no coherent thesis is advanced.

May Poseidon thrust upon me an irrational desire to undertake coital alignment with a bovine beauty (a horny heifer/arousable angus/titillated toro, if you'd be so kind)! Hamilton took from the best sources to cobble together slick summaries of all your old time myth favorites. You got to be kidding, I remember the basics and it has already helped in my classic reads when these figures show up and if my memory fails, I can look here as a reference. and fits the fairytale mode with how Psyche finds a perfect love with Cupid but after losing him is put through a series of trials to be reunited with Cupid, and live happily ever after.Niobe, daughter of Tantalus, disrespected the Goddess Leto by exclaiming to the people that they should worship and burn incense to her and not to the Goddess. This 75th anniversary edition of a classic bestseller is stunningly illustrated and designed to enchant fans of Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology at all ages. Some of the tales have a really insidious tone that I think could make for some chilling cinematics.

Since its original publication by Little, Brown and Company in 1942, Edith Hamilton’s Mythology has sold millions of copies throughout the word and established itself as a perennial bestseller.Praised throughout the world for its authority and lucidity, Mythology is Edith Hamilton's masterpiece--the standard by which all other books on mythology are measured. Goodreads is not really set up to handle comparative reviews smoothly, so the discussion is split across the six book reviews.

I have this now on Kindle, I come across this book constantly referenced in other books, so got my own copy. Aside from that, we get a very superficial mention of the Norse myths that takes up maybe the last 5% of the book.Reading this you get to understand the culture of the Greeks, what they believed in and the values of these stories. However, I really need to point this out again: this is supposed to be a comprehensive work of mythology as a whole!
