Description

The adjective senile was formerly used because most sufferers develop dementia in old age, after the age of 65, and so dementia was seen as an inevitable part of aging. But it is now known that, although most people with dementia are over 65, thousands of sufferers are younger than that. Humanities & Social Sciences > Education > Educational Psychology > Introduction to Educational Psychology It is characterized by an excessive increase in impulsivity and hyperactivity and difficulty in maintaining attention for a continuous period. Of course, I did recognize many of the psychologists and concepts that were presented. They've covered everything from Freud, to Pavlov, to Zimbardo. But here are some things I found interesting from each chapter that I don't remember learning in school. Concentration is the process of the mind that consists of voluntarily focusing attention on an objective. Through concentration, the person momentarily leaves aside everything that may interfere with his or her capacity for attention.

Famous social psychologists include Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo but have you heard of Robert Zajonc? Robert Zajonc's experiments showed that 'the more you see it the more you like it.' Meaning that we tend to like things that we're familiar with, or that we've been exposed to frequently. For example, you may not like the design of a poster in your classroom, but the more you see it, the more it starts to grow on you. This causes an attitude change on a subconscious level - you can start liking things that you didn't like without even realizing it! (Which is, I suppose, is why advertisements are such an important aspect of marketing) Although this work is important and interesting, in my opinion, it fails to get to the core of why we do what we do. So if we’re interested in learning about what’s going on inside us, we need to dig deeper. How to Select the Best Psychology Books The main characteristic of humanistic psychology is to consider the human being as a whole, knowing that there are multiple factors that intervene in mental health, in his personal growth and in his self-realization. Among them converge and interrelate aspects such as emotions, body, feelings, behavior, thoughts, etc. While the personal development books I listed were practical, most of my selections for the best psychology books axre theoretical. ( Self-Therapy is the exception. And certain sections in KWML and The Wisdom of the Enneagram are practical too.) We believe in the power of discovery. That's why we create books for everyone that explore ideas and nurture curiosity about the world we live in.Also as I mentioned with other books in this series I'm not a big fan of the format; in this book it was alright but that added to how slowly I got through it.

Described as “the Bible of trauma” for struggling readers, The Body Keeps the Score is the culmination of Dr Bessel Van Der Kolk’s entire career. One of the world’s leading experts on traumatic stress, Van Der Kolk highlights the clear effects that trauma has on literally reshaping the body and brain. Drawing on his status as an active therapist, continually learning from what works for his patients best, Van Der Kolk delivers a wonderfully personal yet analytic approach to trauma recovery. Considering the frustrating physical effects of trauma related by his patients, Van Der Kolk suggests a fresh paradigm for treatment. This book was pretty good as a refresher for people already knowledgeable about psychology and contained some things I didn't know. However, some concepts are considered inaccurate now and it isn't clear enough in this book which concepts those are.

The Invisible Gorilla describes how, when we are focused on one thing, we tend to overlook everything else. The book examines many factors which contribute to these behaviours: expectations, emotions, social norms, among other forces. It uncovers the irrational mistakes that we consistently make – mistakes that are predictable. Ariely also offers advice on breaking these behaviours. E si comincia poi ad entrare in quella che è davvero psicologia con Wundt, Ebbinghaus, Binet e Piaget. Nomi che mi hanno accompagnata per anni di studi. In this chapter, we learn about the earliest psychologists and some of the (weird) things they believed in. For example, Wilhelm Wundt believed that every living being has a consciousness, even single-celled organisms (an amoeba's ability to devour food means it has some form of consciousness). Fascinated by psychology I have been reading this non-fiction for a few months. I have always had a love for psychology and would like to one day become a psychologist. I realised a few months ago, however, that I did not actually know much about the subject I fascinated. I signed up for AP Psychology next year, so I decided to read this book for two reasons 1. to broaden my horizon in about an area I have always been interested in and 2. to prepare myself for my next year's AP course. I enjoyed this book so much because it covered so many aspects of psychology. Whether it be autism, how we learn a language or just fatherhood, the details about that matter are included in this book.

As far as Western psychology has come in the last 120 years or so, Eastern psychology is thousands of years older. Start Where You Are is based on what’s called Lojong that’s at least 300 years old. This mind training practice is based on 59 slogans or aphorism that demonstrate the brilliance of Buddhist psychology. And Chodren, a Western Buddhist teacher, does a beautiful job explaining the meaning behind these aphorisms. The Psychology Book is the perfect introduction to the science, aimed at adults with an interest in the subject and students wanting to gain more of an overview. Here you'll discover key concepts by psychologists who have significantly enhanced our understanding of the human mind and behaviour. Learn about everyone who's contributed to the big ideas in psychology, incorporating the ideas of today's scientists as well those of the ancient philosophers and pioneers. Environmental psychology is in charge of analyzing the relationship between people and their environment. In this case, two types of environments are distinguished: natural and human-made. In other words, its theoretical field is interdisciplinary and focuses on behavioral and psychological variables.I can’t imagine a list of the best psychology books not including Frankl’s classic. I first read Man’s Search for Meaning in my early 20s. But it didn’t mean anything to me until rereading it in my mid-30s. Frankl’s observations as a captive in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II are instructive for every human being. All readers will gain a new perspective on their lives and what drives them after reading this book.

With handwriting analysis, graphologists try to discover aspects of the personality that the person being analyzed does not want to show us, either because it does not suit them, because they are not aware of them or simply because they seem irrelevant. As the title suggests, this book dispels 50 popular misconceptions in psychology. These are claims that are not scientifically true but still continue to be spread by the general public. The title of the book refers to earlier research in this area: when participants are told to count how many times players passed the ball in a basketball game, they do not even notice someone dressed as a gorilla walking through the game!Pinker makes the case for language as an ability unique to humans: we evolved this to be able to communicate. The book explores many cases that support this idea that language and grammar are in-built (an idea that was first proposed by the linguist Noam Chomsky). Concentration is one of the fundamental skills for learning or the process of knowledge. It is related to attention, being both stages of the same process. Attention selects what is considered most important and concentration is the focusing of attention on a certain objective.
