Disciplines of a Godly family is equally good - packed with great practical ideas for the family man. I am therefore so grateful to God for this great aid to the overriding aim of all of our lives: Christlikeness - read it and repent. Kent Hughes’s inspiring and bestselling book Disciplines of a Godly Man ―now updated with fresh references and suggested resources―is filled with godly advice aimed at helping men grow in the disciplines of prayer, integrity, marriage, leadership, worship, purity, and more. This book was not only encouraging but also convicting, providing insight on how we tend to approach different situations, people, and God’s word.

In the current age in which we find elusive distinguishing a mere male from an actual man, this book is not only a must-reading, but also what I deemed it a whole university course, so to speak. The chapters on marriage and fatherhood are about what you'd expect, though I think he does a good job of warning fathers not to be too harsh in punishment; something often quite lacking in the Christian world. The applications of the principles seemed unnecessarily wooden, so the group was able to wrestle with how to apply each discipline with wisdom. These works, both classic and contemporary are a great resource that I will draw from in the future. Hughes lays out quite the daunting challenge of living a disciplined Christian life with his 16 specific areas of discipline for the Christian man to live by. Thee chapter on prayer was also personally convicting and edifying as that’s something I can work on more to improve. Samuell 5 records David's initial assumption of power and documents that David took on additional wives and concubines from Jerusalem.

References to Jesus and His people's role in all of these disciplines were largely absent, so the group was able to point one another to Christ and remind one another we're in this together, for the long haul. DoaGM put an unnecessary amount of guilt on one with a tender conscience, so the group was able to remind one another that we are disciplined by grace and out of grace.

The book is then packed with another 50 pages or so of 'resources' including the hilariously dated 'Bible on Audiocassette', which, honestly, I'm surprised made it into the updated version (the word is so old that my spell-checker is telling me I have it spelled incorrectly). To be fair, he spends the last 6 pages or so speaking on the disciplines in the context of grace and warning against legalism.

Be involved, be willing to be uncomfortable, to be challenged, and to fail, if all for the glory of Christ. My most recent reading of this book was in the last two years as I slowly went over it with some of the high school young men in my church. It not only teaches how to live a life of Christian discipline, but also instills the desire to do so into a young heart longing to live a life of integrity, meaning, and fulfillment. The appendix of the book should not be skipped over by the readers as there’s incredible resources in these pages. For that reason, I’m delighted to see it just so slightly refreshed as it’s prepared to challenge a whole new generation of men with its biblical principles and timeless wisdom.Relationships - which he identifies as the disciplines of purity, marriage, fatherhood, and friendship. He points out the statistics of the amount of TV people watch on a daily basis as compared to the relatively small amount spent reading. Leadership is another short chapter that bring a different perspective, but something that is important for men especially.
