Finally we should talk about that roof. This was the first time in a long while that I broke a set during construction while trying to get those clips attached to that central bar. I attribute this to the new, more open design of Ray’s hut compared to Daditwins’ submitted design.

That said, Ray the Castaway is a bit of an exception, as it didn’t go through the typical 10,000 votes and review round process, as it was the winning entry in the Do You Want To Go To The Seaside LEGO Ideas competition, following in the footsteps of recent LEGO Ideas GWPs like 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures, 40448 Vintage Car and 40487 Sailboat Adventures, There’s a small beach section, with a bottle (presumably with a message in it), and a really clever SOS sigh fashioned out of dead grey eels and a yellow Life Preserver, spelling it out.Congratulations to David and Diego! You first start building the base that consists of blue, beige and green colors. The blue represents the ocean while the beige represents the sand. The green represents some of the grass.

“Ray the Castaway” by DadiTwins

Ray the Castaway by Dadi Twins has won the LEGO Group’s official “ Do You Want To Go to the Seaside?” contest! Here, we have the LEGO Ray minifigure. He has a gray piece where he can look for things far away. Ray has a nice beard, printed torso and red shorts. His skin tone is yellow which is the traditional classic skin tone of LEGO minifigures. There are some fun techniques such as the Palm Trees, and how dense it is, giving the small beach section a very lived-in, survival vibe which translates well. On the side of the shelter, there’s a fishing road with a fish that is caught. A yellow cup is near the shelter for Ray to sip on. The raft can be attached to the shelter too through the rope.

Here’s a look at the Ray the Castaway minifigure, who has unkempt hair and a grumpy expression. I love his mismatched clothes and red shorts. LEGO IDEAS 40566 Ray the Castaway is a really neat and cool set that has lots of playable features. Although its small, LEGO fans can recreate many castaway scenes on the desert island. These include cooking with the campfire, exploring all the small animals nearby, resting in the shelter, enjoying the shade under the nice palm trees or exploring the oceans with the raft. Overall, this is a nice set. The complete set took about 45 minutes to build and that includes sorting the pieces too. Design-wise, I like how closely they kept to DadiTwins’ original design, and how it’s so immediately recognisable. Ray can spend time cooking with the campfire. He has a pan and can roast the fish that he caught. A blue and yellow parrot sits on top. This is a pretty neat looking parrot. There’s also a nice big red crab nearby.This is the front box for the LEGO IDEAS 40566 Ray the Castaway front box. It has the recommended age, set number and number of pieces. You continue with the desert island by building the shelter and adding more details. Now, we have the fishing rod with the fish, a yellow cup, cooking pan and a small fire. You also build a brown treasure chest. There are some red diamonds crystals inside. The treasure chest can be closed. With many new sets launching during its period of availability it should not be too difficult to find something to buy to acquire it. There are lots of details in this set and they include 2 snakes. A yellow swim tube is also here too. There’s a nice clear beer bottle and there’s a starfish too.

Real Value [4]– Plenty of October releases makes this good value as you’ll likely end up getting one Ray the Castaway is a fan design submitted by DadiTwins, and as you can see from the original design, has mostly kept the aesthetics and overall look, with a few small tweaks. The design is clearly an homage to Tom Hanks’ Castaway, but there isn’t a volleyball, which was also not present in the original design. I’m not sure if that was too on the nose, but it shouldn’t be too hard to add your own Wilson volleyball (especially if you draw on one!) to the set to make it a proper Tom Hanks tribute!
