Operation Harpie is dangerous. Illegal gold miners can be extremely violent, due to the financial stakes involved. Some mine shafts produce 3 to 4 kg of gold a month, which is worth around 100,000 euros. In the last ten years, five soldiers have been killed while deployed on Operation Harpie. The Argentine National Gendarmerie (Gendarmería Nacional Argentina; GNA) members wears a green kepi as part of fatigue and full dress uniforms. portrait of General Charles de Gaulle of the Free French Forces wearing a kepi French army – history [ edit ] General Boulanger wearing a kepi c.1880 In 1931, Général Paul-Frédéric Rollet assumed the role of 1st Inspector of the Foreign Legion, a post created at his initiative. While serving as colonel of the 1st Foreign Infantry Regiment (1925–1931), Rollet was responsible for planning the centennial celebrations of the Legion's foundation; scheduling this event for Camarón Day 30 April 1931. He was subsequently credited with creating much of the modern mystique of the Legion by restoring or creating many of its traditions. Kepis also appear with non-military uniforms, particularly popular with railway and tram operators around the world. British Rail employees from the mid 1960s to the mid 1980s wore Kepis. After its triumphant victory parade in Paris, the French Foreign Legion returned to Algeria, where it was reorganized once again. Only one regiment remained after this process. Three years later, Napoleon III, the King of France, decided to establish his rule in Mexico and sent a strong military contingent, with the core being the Legion, to support this effort. Despite facing a hostile environment and the outbreak of a popular revolution led by Benito Juarez, the Legion made a name for itself through its courage and sacrifice in numerous battles. One such famous event took place when Captain Danjon, two second lieutenants, and 62 legionnaires from the 3rd company found themselves in a Mexican ambush and managed to retreat to a dilapidated hacienda near Cameron, where they fought off far more numerous opponents for almost an entire day. When they ran out of ammunition, food, and water, the last five survivors launched a bayonet charge, in which two were killed and the remaining three were spared by the Mexican colonel Combas due to their bravery. The Mexican campaign lasted for four years and resulted in significant losses for the legionary troops. The selection process for the French Foreign Legion is a rigorous one, with candidates going through a series of physical and psychological tests, as well as a medical examination. Those who successfully complete the three-week training period in Aubagne will sign a contract for a minimum of five years, during which they will receive a monthly salary of 1,200 euros and will be required to serve in non-European units for at least two years. The contract also provides the option to seek French citizenship and the possibility of re-enlistment in the Legion upon completion of the initial contract. While joining the Legion means giving up certain civilian privileges, such as possession of a driver’s license or the ability to marry, it also provides its members with a new identity and protection.

Today, some units of the Legion are in Corsica or overseas possessions (mainly in French Guyana, guarding Guiana Space Centre), while the rest are in the south of mainland France. The current headquarter is in Aubagne, France. What’s the difference between the French Army and the French Foreign Legion? On 30 April 1947, the “Képi Blanc” newspaper was launched in Sidi-Bel-Abbès (“It caps the Legion” wrote Captain Gheysens, founder and first editor of the newspaper). The kepi ( English: / ˈ k ɛ p iː/ or / ˈ k eɪ p iː/) is a cap with a flat circular top and a peak, or visor. In English, the term is a loanword from French: képi, itself a re-spelled version of the Alemannic German: Käppi, a diminutive form of Kappe, meaning "cap". In Europe, the kepi is most commonly associated with French military and police uniforms, though versions of it were widely worn by other armies during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. [1] In North America, it is usually associated with the American Civil War, as it was worn by soldiers on both sides of the conflict. As a result of the historical military usage, the kepi is still widely used by uniformed marching bands in Greece.

Choosing materials: Look for hats made from durable materials like canvas or nylon, which can withstand the elements. For dressier occasions, pair your foreign legion hat with a blazer, dress pants, and leather shoes. This look is perfect for weddings, fancy dinners, or other formal events. Style: Boonie hats have a more casual look compared to the foreign legion hat, and are often worn for outdoor activities like hiking or camping. For example, you are working as a combat medic. So if you want to change regiment, you can’t go to a French unit like the 1 st Infantry Regiment. This small detail could become very important later. Current operations of the French Foreign Legion

Main operations during the Algerian War included the Battle of Algiers and the Bataille of the Frontiers, fought by 60,000 soldiers including French and Legion paratroopers. For paratroopers of the Legion, the 1st Foreign Parachute Regiment (1 er REP) and 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2 ème REP), were the only known foreign active parachute regiments, exclusively commanded by Pierre Paul Jeanpierre for the 1 er REP [45] and the paratrooper commanders of the 2 ème REP. [47] The remainder of French paratrooper units of the French Armed Forces were commanded by Jacques Massu, Buchond, Marcel Bigeard, Paul Aussaresses. Other Legion offensives in the mountains in 1959 included operations Jumelles, Cigales, and Ariège in the Aures and the last in Kabylie. [45] Prior to the end of the Algerian War, the legion hadn’t been stationed in mainland France except in wartime. Until 1962, the Foreign Legion headquarters was located in Sidi Bel Abbès, Algeria. The Foreign Legion was created by Louis Philippe, [12] the King of the French, on 10 March 1831 to allow the incorporation of foreign nationals into the French Army from the foreign regiments of the Kingdom of France. [13] Recruits included soldiers from the recently disbanded Swiss and German foreign regiments of the Bourbon monarchy. [14] The Royal Ordinance for the establishment of the new regiment specified that the foreigners recruited could only serve outside France. [15] The French expeditionary force that had occupied Algiers in 1830 was in need of reinforcements and the Legion was accordingly transferred by sea in detachments from Toulon to Algeria. [11] [16]As a legionnaire (up to the rank of corporal), you are housed, clothed, fed, and medically cared for free. In 1895, the French Foreign Legion was deployed to Madagascar, where it landed in Majung on April 23. From their base, the legionnaires began to construct a road for the advancing French forces. However, the tropical climate, diseases, and insects caused significant casualties among the legionnaires, while losses in battle were almost insignificant due to the Hova tribe’s local insurgents regularly fleeing before the Legion without a fight. The Norwegian armed forces used kepis until World War II and still retain them as part of the full dress of officer cadets. Kepis also found their way into the uniforms of numerous railway and streetcar operators in the United States. From there it was adopted by other public transport operators around the world, including the examples given below:
