Description

Barrow and the surrounding area has been settled non-continuously for several millennia with evidence of Neolithic inhabitants on Walney Island. Despite a rich history of Roman settlement across Cumbria and the discovery of related artefacts in the Barrow area, no buildings or structures have been found to support the idea of a functioning Roman community on the Furness peninsula. [10] The Furness Hoard discovery of Viking silver coins and other artefacts in 2011 provided significant archaeological evidence of Norse settlement in the early 9th century. Several areas of Barrow including Yarlside and Ormsgill, as well as "Barrow" and "Furness", have names of Old Norse origin. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded the settlements of Hietun, Rosse and Hougenai, which are now the districts of Hawcoat, Roose and Walney respectively.

There was a proverb quoted by Sir John Davies that “whoso lives by west of the Barrow, lives west of the law.” [8] Barrow navigation [ edit ] Striker Matt Smith, the Football League's top scorer, had little opportunity to add to his 12-goal total.Behind the main house was a large, overgrown garden with a pond full of frogs. The garden was home to a large number of gnomes; the Weasleys had to regularly de-gnome the garden by throwing them over the hedge. [1]

An army was led by Domnall ua Néill into Leinster; and he plundered from the Berbha eastwards to the sea; and he carried off a great prey of cattle; and he laid siege to the Norsemen and the Leinstermen for two months. On this occasion were slain Fionn, son of Goirmghilla; Dunghal, son of Dunghal Ua Riagain; Ronan, son of Bruadar, son of Duibhghilla, and other nobles of the Leinstermen along with them. History [ edit ] In Behind the Whistle, former Premier League referee Chris Foy goes through a selection of key match decisions from the latest Sky Bet Championship, League One and League Two action. Creatures slain within the barrows tunnel now correctly contribute towards the kill count after using barrows amulets. In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets the set of the Burrow was built near Grey's Wood on the outskirts of the village of Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire. Rupert Grint's current house is 4km as the crow flies from the set of his character's ( Ron Weasley's) house. In all future film appearances of The Burrow the set was built at near by Leavesden Studios in Watford, Hertfordshire. In the 2015 Indices of Deprivation, Barrow was ranked as the 44th most deprived district in England (out of a total of 326). [189] The equivalent figures for 2007 and 2010 stood at 29th most deprived and 32nd most deprived respectively. [190] The Indices of Deprivation is based on income, employment, education, health, crime and barriers to housing and services and living environment. Within these subcategories, most notably Barrow ranked as the 5th most deprived in terms of health deprivation and disability, and in huge contrast, 324th most deprived in terms of access to housing and services (i.e. 3rd least deprived). [189] In the 2010 Indices of Deprivation, the majority of areas in Barrow Island, Central, Hindpool, Ormsgill were amongst the 3% most deprived areas in the country, while large parts of suburban Barrow including Newbarns and Roose were amongst the 25% of least deprived areas in England. [190] Health [ edit ] Furness General Hospital, the primary hospital for Barrow and South West CumbriaThe Burrow was located on the outskirts of Ottery St Catchpole, a small village located in Devon, England. [1] It was so well hidden that Molly Weasley doubted that the postman even knew it existed. Nestled amongst rolling hills and fertile meadows, other wizarding families in the area included the Diggorys, the Lovegoods and the Fawcetts. [16] The building itself might once have been an old stone pigpen, which had several crooked stories attached to it. Four or five chimneys dotted the roof of the house, and the entire building was most likely held up by magic due to its crazy construction. [1] The Barrows brothers were ancient warriors of Saradomin who established a reputation of near invincibility while fighting in the God Wars. Originally, Torag wanted to sign up for the crusades, but Guthan persuaded all of his brothers to join after an incident where he killed Commander Jaycliff in a drunken fit of rage after Ahrim killed his lover Isolde, having believed her to left him. Fearful that he would be killed in the subsequent investigation, he went to the Zarosian Mahjarrat Sliske for protection, who required all of them to join. As the brothers left, Sliske gave them special equipment and superhuman strength. It took the set designers 24 weeks to build a model of the Burrow for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and it took 6 minutes to burn it down. Although it is at the end of a peninsula, Barrow is only around 20 minutes from the Lake District, [87] Barrow has been referred to as a "gateway to the lakes" and "where the lakes meets the sea", [88] a status which could be enhanced by the new marina complex and planned cruise ship terminal.
