Compost is part of the John Innes range that offer traditional, superior quality soil-based composts. It also is transported around green material (leaves/stems) enabling the plant to follow light sources. is a loam based sowing compost containing all essential nutrition and trace elements needed for healthy germination and seedling development. This compost has a carefully balanced nutrient content to suit most young plants and allow them to grow. John Innes no2 has excellent soil structure, and includes sand which promotes drainage and provides stability for larger plants. Service is always outstanding, information about deliveries is always clear and the drivers are blessed with common sense! John Innes Composts were originally developed at the John Innes Horticultural Institute in the 1930s.

Stem cuttings need to be in a moist environment out of direct sunlight until they have rooted so either place in a cold frame, a covered propagator or cover with polythene, using supports to prevent the polythene from touching the cuttings. This specially formulated compost, made from the traditional John Innes recipe of sterilised loam, peat, horticultural grit with added nutrients provides the perfect medium for young plant growth. A peat free blend that is developed specially for the needs of all young plants to help them establish.

Our screening and blending plant is an indoor opperation, ensuring your topsoil and compost is low in moisture all year round, this means your not paying for water, just quality compost and topsoil. Loam - Loam is the most important ingredient in all John Innes compost, supplying the main body of the compost. is designed for young seedlings and plants which need a low but balanced nutrient supply for plant growth without damaging delicate roots. Based on this traditional recipe and approved by the John Innes manufacturer association, Westland have expertly blended and further perfected this range. Gardeners can add nutrients by applying fertilisers (either artificial or naturally derived) to boost plant growth and improve flowering and fruiting. These ‘John Innes’ composts revolutionised the way composts were produced and are still produced to this very recipe today.

Sand - The coarse sand or grit is used as a physical conditioner to allow excess water to drain from the compost and thus prevent water-logging. The loam supplies the nutrition needed for the base of the plant, which helps to absorb and release plant nutrients as required. Most potting compost or media offered is soil-less and either based entirely on peat, has some peat in its formulation or is peat-free. Our most popular compost, John Innes no3 compost is a rich mixture that is intended for final potting or for the re-potting of mature plants. There is a wide range of different methods for taking cuttings, depending on the plant and time of year.John Innes composts were developed over 50 years ago and are based on a traditional recipe of loam, peat and horticultural grit with added nutrients. Prepare the stem or root cuttings according to type, ensuring that they are not allowed to dry out between cutting and inserting.
