You've probably read all these books several times already, but you can never get tired of these individual pieces of magic. This newly-illustrated edition of an avowed children's favorite has all the makings of a classic match-up: Milne had Shepard, Carroll had Tenniel, and now Dahl has Smith. Quentin Blake is one of the best-known and best-loved children's illustrators and it's impossible now to think of Roald Dahl's writings without imagining Quentin Blake's illustrations. When his parents are unceremoniously eaten by a rhinoceros that escapes from London Zoo, James is forced to go and live with his unpleasant aunts.

Some of his better-known works include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox, Matilda, The Witches, and The BFG. In 1999 he became the first ever Children's Laureate and in 2013 he was knighted for services to illustration. However, I was quite surprised to open it and see that the entire book has been printed with an orange ink.You can bet his wicked old aunts are up in that rickety house planning some kind of no-good and mean schemes. I downloaded this book as I read his paper copy to my grandson over Christmas which we both enjoyed.

I was going to try and avoid dark because there’s so much of it in my portfolio, but it just wasn’t working without it. Roald Dahl Books Get New Edits—And Critics Cry Censorship: The Controversy Surrounding 'Charlie And The Chocolate Factory' And More". Though Roald Dahl declined numerous offers during his life to have a film version of James and the Giant Peach produced, his widow, Felicity Dahl, approved an offer to have a film adaptation produced in conjunction with Disney in the mid-1990s. A nearby barren peach tree, in turn, produces a single peach which soon grows to the size of a house. At one point, Miss Spider tells James about her father’s death at the hand of Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spike.
