Description

Ancient weapons from the Dark Age of Technology, these feared instruments of warfare have sent a chill up the spine (and a sting up the calf) or many gamers. Cataphractii? Well you can run them, but if you can swap them for Tartaros terminators I think it fits the theme well. It doesn’t really matter because the approach will be the same – strap lightning claws to them, run them up in the Spartan, and cause havoc on the charge with the Falcons special rule. The same goes with your Contemptor – you’re going to want to be aggressive, so prioritise weaponry that lets you make the most of that. A melta on the gun arm and a heavy flamer in the fist isn’t a bad idea, though a meltagun in the fist really doubles up on thr

Multi-melta: Multi-meltas in a heavy squad like this are in a rough place – they’re heavy so jumping out of a rhino will leave them on snap shots, and even with twin-linked that’s not great. They’re longer range than meltaguns which is great, but you still need to be within 12″ to get armourbane with them. That leaves them in a difficult place where you need to be getting close but also when you get close you won’t be able to shoot well. Probably best to leave multi-meltas to vehicles and dreadnoughts. I particularly like how in-keeping with the idea of the evolution of the Dreadnought this model is. The 80s sci-fi echo in its design gives the sense model is a progenitor, whilst not being so removed from the Warhammer 40,000 Dreadnoughts of the last ten years to seem like a different unit. It’s like a walking piece of archaeology, like putting a steam locomotive with a neutrino bomb strapped to it next to a Primaris bullet train. It may seem overwhelming at first, but there is some necessary reading. The original Horus Heresy book series is enormous, with over 50 titles in total, many of which are not available anymore. However, the first three are must-reads for any Horus Heresy fan. Finally, Scatter dice and a range of templates to represent the devastating effects of the biggest weapons in the 31st Millennium are also being released – there’s a set of three smaller templates for flamers and explosive blasts, as well as a massive Hellstorm template and an Apocalyptic Barrage marker.

Shooting/Wound Allocation

Guns are all well and good, but battlefield logistics are even more thrilling – relaying commands to your platoons is the stuff tabletop generals dream of. A new resin upgrade kit will let you outfit your plastic Deimos-pattern Rhino with a trusty vox relay and geo-locator beacon, transforming it into a Damocles Command Rhino from which your commanders can display their tactical brilliance. We’ve only just seen the magnificent boxed set for the new edition Warhammer: The Horus Heresy, but that’s just the beginning of your journey through the Age of Darkness. There’s a lot more stuff coming down the pipeline for the 31st Millennium. Big guns accounted for, how about moving large cohorts of heavily armoured Legionaries right up to the enemy lines and disgorging them into the heart of combat? Even the mighty Mastodon is having its hull tinkered with to suit these new plastic sponsons. Predator Cannon: Solid if not exceptional, and of course nice and cheap. One of these throws out a decent number of shots, and the Rending is nice if a little risky to try and get to go off. The best bit is that Strength 8 though, meaning it can meaningfully target light vehicles and also get Instant Death off on most infantry. Not a bad choice, but probably not the best one.

There are still a ton of special rules for shooting and combat, which keeps in the complexity of the game.

The Lore

The Praetor with Power Sword’s axe-wielding compatriot – or adversary, depending on how you paint the box – is easier to assemble. This is a spectacular selection of miniatures, and will excite both painters and gamers. Grab your plastic cutters and your glue, you’ve got work to do! Warhammer: The Horus Heresy – Age of Darkness Review – Value Breakdown There’s a staggering amount of detail on this figure. From the extras around his waist to the textures on his armour – and his face! There’s a lot to love here, and plenty more to paint. Praetor with Power Axe This hefty box also contains a Special Weapons Upgrade Set, a Land Raider Proteus , and a Deredeo Dreadnought to provide blistering heavy support to your Legion. Warhammer 40,000, Age of Sigmar, Warhammer Fantasy, Kill Team, the list goes on and on. The Warhammer universes are as diverse in their setting as they are filled with rules.
