In 878: Vikings – Invasions of England, players control the invading Vikings or the English nobles who are trying to withstand the invasion. If players have a group of four, that’s the best way to play 878: Vikings as each player will individually get a faction to play. Yet you feel like invading forces of Vikings or the desperate mustering of the English trying to fight off those invaders.

I hope that you have enjoyed these Action Points on this great game and I hope that you get a chance to try it out for yourself. The colors Black and Red are for the Viking Norsemen and Berzerkers, while Blue and Green for the English Housecarl and Thegn respectively. And they usually do roll at least one, and since they get to swing first you might lose that extra die you need (because those Berserkers hit often! Final Score: 4 Stars – Historical accuracy only enhances the fun whether players are defending England or raiding its northeast coast.Yes, there are lots of Vikings, and yes they’ll be lots of Invasions, on most turns as it turns out. The communities there were violently disrupted by the arrival of this new culture and military force. I really like how Academy Games has created a cool historic based game that is simple to learn and fun to play. So while I like the small deck, small hand, and the ability to swap in advanced cards, there is definitely room for this to improve.

One other interesting note about Battle is that the Vikings have to lose a Berserker unit as a part of their first loss in any Battle that Berserkers are present. My wife, on the other hand, kept using cards that pressed an advantage and I simply didn’t have an answer for it.If this ability is used properly, one Viking faction player can do considerable damage to the English and then leave the Leader token well positioned to do some more damage on the other Viking faction player’s turn.

Hit results cause an enemy unit to be defeated (opponent’s choice, except if a Berserker is present and the Viking player is attacking. In the first round of battle, the first hit against the Viking player must be taken as a Berserker since they would rush into the thick of a battle). On their turn each faction will receive Reinforcements, activate their Leaders (this is mostly for the Vikings as the English don’t get a Leader until the 5th Round), Move their armies, Fight in regions where there are both enemy and friendly troops and then draws cards back up to 3 cards. Cities and towns have garrisons of units, but much of the countryside shires are barren of military force. While not quite as thematic-feeling in this one (yet still thematic, if you think about it), this game has two ways that each side can win the game.

Mark your calendar for 12/27 at 1PM Eastern Time (ET) for a deep dive into the final stages of building this epic game. Now I have the following games that scratch a similar itch: a war of whispers, war of the ring, root, and inis. The choosing faction is decided by which Viking faction has their cube drawn from the draw bag first.

If the ‘English’ defenders go first then their opportunity to react to the Viking invasion is stymied. For each blank face rolled, you have a 'Command Decision' and may use that to retreat a unit in the battle to an adjacent area. They have to come from the sea, as the Vikings would cross the North Sea or the English Channel in Longships to get to England, and then land and move into a Battle.

You’re not exactly keen on canceling a decisive campaign just because you can’t find your Viking ship tokens, are you? Cards in a player’s hand could also be event cards, which provide significant bonuses and additional tactics. If he doesn’t eliminate defending units on the first battle dice roll, one of the leader’s remaining moves is used up. After a couple of battles, if the English player is not channeling Monty Python’s Holy Grail “Run Away!
