Description

Graphic Dinosaurs: Giganotosaurus takes the form of a comic, telling stories of the perilous lives of these giant lizards with vivid, full-colour illustrations. But like the boy who cried wolf in the famous folktale, Bonehead doesn't take his job as lookout seriously. Biography: Jonny Duddle (Author, Illustrator) Jonny Duddle overheard the story of his first book The Pirate Cruncher while sailing on a square-rigger. Giganotosaurus (the dinosaur) lived about ninety million years ago, and it was almost the largest carnivorous dinosaur. When the Gigantosaurus finally comes, the little dinosaurs don't believe Bonehead and they don't run yet somehow it's Bonehead who gets eaten.

In a vertical gatefold surprise, it looks like Bonehead has got crunched - but in a hilarious reveal we discover this annoying little dinosaur is safe after all. Giganotosaurus was a member of the carcharodontosaurids, with family members like Carcharodontosaurus ("great white shark lizard" and Mapusaurus ("Earth lizard"), all enormous predatory dinosaurs descended from the allosaurs. The giganotosaurus are large grey or green meat-eating dinosaurs that are from the planet of Gigantos. And I was most happy to see in the back endpapers the disclaimer that Gigantosaurs had been made up for the story BUT that it is very similar to what once was a real dinosaur, the Giganotosaurus. As a grown-up, it is enjoyable to read, there's a nice rhythm to the story and it's got enough humour and points of interaction to keep it intersting for the reader as well as the audience.

I liked the back matter providing information about various dinosaurs and the endpapers with a dinosaur tail and bones. I appreciate the rhythm of the text but there are some boo-boos (but nothing that will really distract kids or puzzle a reader). His books have won the Times Educational Supplement, Primary School Book Award for Science in 1996, the Helen Roney Sattler Award from the Dinosaur Society in 1993, and the Educational Press Association of America Distinguished Achievement Award in 1993. Book was listed as 'very good' condition, but when it arrived the cover had stains, creases and folds, and a small tear on one edge. Accompanied by a full glossary and index, this makes Graphic Dinosaurs: Giganotosaurus both fun and informative to use.

The illustrations seem better with every read: I keep finding new details, which is a lot of fun to point out to my little one. Although their dinosaur elders warn four youngsters about the fierce Gingantosaurus, they still enjoy playing. Giganotosaurus probably preyed on the giant sauropods that shared its South American habitat - titanosaurs, often giants even by sauropod standards. The idea is the dinosaur is trying to practice for the real moment when and if the Gigantosaurus should show up.This book doesn't have dinosaur poop in but does have lots of dinosaurs and beautiful illustrations throughout. From the 'Meat-eating Bull' to the 'Patagonian Claw', discover how we know about dinosaurs and what might have happened to them! At 2-and-a-half, this is probably a bit too long and involved for him, but he likes it enough that I'm sure it will get more reading as he gets older. I thought the illustrations were very well done, but I just couldn't see Bonehead as being a liar as the other characters saw him.
