We actually make the chord loose enough so that we can keep our poles inside, but we are not speedster and it might not work for you. Although I haven't had occasion to use it in the rain yet, you would definitely need to wear a brimmed cap to keep the rain from dripping right into your eyes because the hood has such a minimal brim.It’s a little difficult to tell where the rain protection ends and the sweat condensation begins, so when you’re on the move you’ll have to manage your body heat as best as you can. I make sure my pack has a cover and all my pack contents are in drysacks so I've never had a problem with gear getting wet. As mentioned in those threads, the FT poncho is very thin and it will probably not fit over my pack. Again, i often use a very small pack and am a smaller sized person so i can fit the emergency poncho over my small pack at least.
