Cross the road and turn right on a footpath that leads to a left turn over a bridge signposted Hawkshead. Yesterday Helen and I did a lovely walk in the Chilterns with our friend Jude, a 9km loop starting in Pishill and having lunch at the Five Horseshoes in Upper Maidensgrove. On the climb up Latterbarrow alder trees predominate – look out for their catkins in the spring and small cones in the autumn.

If you have time you can take a detour over the bridge into Rothay Park, where you will find a fantastic playground. After the cottages continue on a tarmac road for about 100m and take a right turn towards a farm, followed in just a few steps by a left turn signed ‘Loanthwaite, Hawkshead, Outgate. Like I said earlier, the authors intention is for walkers to plot the route themselves - and this is not too difficult to do. Eat half of the lentils here with the salmon, then save the rest for the puy lentil salad, on page 52, and our vegan recipe, opposite.

Covering everything on the routes from folklore, culture and wildlife to archaeology, geology and architecture, it tells of the past hidden in Lincolnshire’s footpaths. Hardly believable but true, on so many Downland walks you cannot hear any disturbing noise of modern life; no car engines to disturb the peace just the breeze on your cheek and the song of the skylark.

Walking Your Promise - Individual Retreats - designed for one or two people, couples and family members. Directly below you should be able to spot Aunt Emily’s house, “Cedar Holme”, on the crook of two rivers, with its own little harbour. South Downs Way » Danny Cottage is located just a short stroll from The South Downs Way, the long distance footpath and bridleway running for 160 km (99 mi) along the South Downs from Winchester in Hampshire, to Eastbourne in East Sussex. Summary : Wansfell (1588ft / 484m)is a popular walk, usually undertaken from Troutbeck, or straight up the steep northwest side from Ambleside.Look out for the ‘lone runner doing some leg stretches’ (chapter 8) while enjoying the views of the lake, the fells and even Morecambe Bay to the south, (E). Danny Studio is located in the desirable village of Hurstpierpoint and ideally situated for our guests to take full advantage of country life, with many woodland walks and public footpaths on the doorstep. I think he’ll have to keep us up with what he’s currently got though which will cause frustration on here. With a section for kids in each chapter, walkers of all ages are encouraged to explore and engage with the picturesque and endlessly fascinating county of Lincolnshire. com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews.

Alternatively, if coming from Ambleside, turn off the A593 onto the B5286 and immediately on the right after the bridge there is some free parking. This walk, on the quiet Western shore of Windermere, features Wray Castle (‘Blythe Castle’ in the book). Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated. Unlike in Spylark, there is no trig point, but there are spectacular views of the lake stretching down to the islands in the middle. From the summit see if you can spot the Teal making its way gracefully down the lake towards ‘Birthwaite Bay’, (real name: Bowness) and the islands. I prefer it when route instructions are included, but for walkers that like to plot their own way - this book is a good idea. Take a left turn and walk up the tarmac lane, enjoying the views as the lane rises towards the road. All these pass within half a mile of Danny Cottage so you can dip in and out and enjoy the trails for as long as you want.
