Middle notes of Vetiver, Incense and Orris and settles with base notes of Benzoin Siam, Sandalwood and Patchouli. I guess I have a pretty traditionally feminine taste in perfume which is a bit annoying 🙂 I love it when guys rock something others might find girly, like a big aldehyde or floral. The perfumes are oriented towards the exceptional reputation and luxurious character of the company. So my opinion is that here L’Extreme may not necessarily indicate stronger but deeper complexity in notes and development.Encre Noire A L`Extreme opens up with a spicy mix of bergamot, cypress and elemi before slowly moving into the warm heart of incense, Haitian vetiver and iris. In line with the masculine clarity of the fragrance, the French brand has chosen a minimalist design in elegant black. This also has the benefit that I don’t think I’ve gone as noseblind to the notes in Encre Noire as I could have. For approximately ten years the men’s fragrance Encre Noire has fascinated with its masculine sophistication due to the presence of vetiver. To me, this is has an aroma very much like EN but with a strong incense note added in (the elemi is part of that, too).

Encre Noire à l’Extrême conjures up darkness in a way that is soothing and mysterious rather than alienating. The company had established itself as far back as the 19th century with exquisite jewellery and fascinating works of art made of crystal glass. Which is why I don't wear this very often - it's like a masterpiece of a sad song or a masterpiece of a sad drama -- they are absolute genius works of art, and exactly that is why they make you feel that "post-movie sadness" or "song-induced sadness" -- one of the reasons I actively avoid sad movies and very rarely listen to sad songs. I’ll have to try A L’Extreme out some more before I can say if it will replace the original in my winter rotation, but I doubt it I think they’re different enough to both have a place in the rotation, but only for a few more weeks - they’re definitely best suited for winter, in my opinion. Orris and patchouli (which is admittedly a difficult note for me) almost certainly contribute as well to this dirtiness, but it's the sweet top notes that really mess with your mind.Again a little later it turns to powdery, skin-like scents with vetiver and again incense with resins. Interesting and unique scent with unfortunate longevity of 1-2 hours after which it is not even a skin scent - it's gone. Composition of the new fragrance ENCRE NOIRE A L'EXTREME is announced as very masculine, intensive, powerful.

It's VERY nice but somewhat overwhelms or drowns out the vetiver, which is the note that I love so much in the original.
