Located just 100 miles southwest of Delhi, the lush ruins of Bhangarh Fort make for a curious juxtaposition against the desert landscape of Rajasthan. This snap was captured at the Church of Christ the Consoler, a Grade I listed Victorian Gothic Revival built in the 1870s on the grounds of Newby Hall in North Yorkshire. According to her, this grave belonged to a young man whose guilty conscience meant he couldn’t rest easily in his grave.

As befits a place of worship within the walls of which so many of the rich and famous are interred, Westminster Abbey is another of London's haunted churches. As the vessel reached the opposites shore, the newly completed church was suddenly illuminated in a celestial brilliance and singing angels filled the blazing night sky. The Abbey’s Tomb of the Unknown Warrior is a poignant memorial to the soldiers who died in World War 1. Hidden among the region’s many canals, the site is famous for the hundreds of dolls—and doll parts—hanging from trees and scattered among the grass. Dozens of warships, planes, tanks, and railroad cars sank to the bottom of the lagoon, where they remain today in what is known as the “Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon. He did admit that many people had heard the phantom organ music, but he believed that “some telepathic, or auto-suggestive, or atmospheric, or other natural cause may have acted on our auditory nerves, setting up sensations which were transmuted by the brain into external sounds” (1919: 3). People continued to see it soon after, though it always vanished before anyone could grab it (Westwood 2005: 51).

The town now consists of dirt roads, 13 mosques, and more than 300 coral-and-mud houses—and, of course, some resident spirits. St Mary’s Church in the Suffolk hamlet of Akenham looks like any unassuming rural parish church that you’ll find dotted across the countryside.

They encountered a man in a naval uniform, who approached one of the women and whispered in her ear. It's important to note that access to the church is now no longer allowed to help preserve any buried archaeological remains. Infamous for its smuggler and pirate regulars, this haunted Inn is home to many spectoral sights and sounds. Most notable is a 3,000-square-foot ballroom, which Larnach had built as a 21st birthday present for his favorite daughter Kate, who later died of typhoid at age 26 and is said to still haunt the ballroom. The dungeon was designed so that prisoners would fall through a trap door, have their lungs punctured by wooden spikes on the ground, and die a slow, horrific death within earshot of the sinister clan members above. The city of Long Beach purchased the ship in 1967 and turned it into a hotel, and it still serves that purpose today—although the reported ghosts of the deceased passengers get to stay for free. I walked down the aisle to blow them out, and halfway down the way I suddenly had the ice-cold feeling I wasn't alone.
