I was in the era before that, when we had extra large Rickman fibreglass top boxes, so you could fit a radio receiver/transmitter in them, with a whip aerial bolted to the top, a mic on a coiled cable bungeed to the seat and a speaker wherever you could hear it - no earplugs for us! I think that what may have happened was that at the time there was a big specialization happening in the bike market with various segments being clearly defined. The Honda’s huge power surge is breathtakingly fun, and reduced turbo lag makes the 650 a joy to ride fast.

However, its relatively high center of gravity and 600-ish pound weight made getting to grips with turbo cycling through switchbacks, um—how shall I put it— not the most desirable of circumstances. Current: 1981 Honda CX500B - 91k, 1987 MZ ETZ250 (bored to 295cc) - 38k, 1990 MZ ETZ251 - 49k, 1979 Suzuki TS185ER - 9k, 1972 MZ ES250/2 - 16k. When Honda engineered the Turbo, the company was concerned that dealerships wouldn’t know how to work on them. The review I remember reading compared the two and the upshot was that the reviewer was was more impressed with how close the 500 was to the 650 over most of its working range (much of the 650's advantage was above the speed limit).

As such, reviewers in 1983 mostly noted that the CX650T would make an excellent sport touring machine. The CX (or plastic maggot) was the weapon of choice for a lot of dispatchers, along with Wet Dreams, which were very popular with couriers who were still on L plates. Over the next ten thousand miles appearance and performance gradually declined again as neglect got the upper hand on maintenance, but there were no major breakdowns or expense. The frame is completely different, and the styling was marketed to accommodate the American desire for the low stretched look of American cruiser bikes.

The below is an interesting despatch series that features the CX (500) an awful lot in the passing pictures. The electronic ignition system was separate from the rest of the electrical system, but the motorcycle could only be started via the start button. In 1981 Honda released the GL500 Silver Wing, which was a mid-sized touring bike based on the CX500 engine. There is also an MOV, for protection against voltage surges, while an NTC thermistor lowers the inrush currents.

The CX had a 4-valve-per-cylinder, pushrod operated V-twin engine, shaft drive, a 5-speed gearbox, water cooling and Honda’s new ComStar wheels shod with tubeless tires — the first tubeless tires designed for a production motorcycle. The CX650C was a cruiser-oriented bike aimed at the US market, and had it's own frame with a lower seat, teardrop tank and shorter exhaust giving it quite a different look to the other CX650s in 1983's lineup. With all that in mind, Honda turned the CX500 into the 1983 Honda CX650 Turbo you see in this video, as ridden by Brian, one of the two guys behind the Regular Car Reviews YouTube channel. Germany had a restricted version available, which had 37kW of power - essentially restricting it to the kW of the CX500. The shaft drives a bevel gear to which the wheel is joined via a cush-drive, which absorbs and dampens driveline shocks and vibrations. In Japan the GL650 SilverWing Interstate was released as the Limited Edition GL700 Wing Interstate, although it used the same 674 cc engine that was used in the GL650. Although Honda generally favors OHC engines, the cylinder head twist necessitated the use of stubby pushrods to operate the four overhead valves per cylinder, with a forked rocker arm acting off each pushrod.
