All the horror that happened to Lily and her family and so many others could not be imagined by those who have not been there but we shall never forget…My own experience of those shocking happenings was a photo in a local german paper 10 years ago. When we hear, view or read about the Holocaust, we rarely read what happened after the victims were rescued.

Lily’s story is more than what happened to her and her family in the concentration camps — yes, she was in more than one. This is an intensely moving and inspirational memoir by a Holocaust survivor, the now 98 year old Lily Ebert (nee Engelmann), survivor of Auschwitz, of one of the Buchenwald satellite camps and of a forced death march across Germany before being rescued by US soldiers in April 1945. Having read this book I am struck by two things; Lily Ebert is a remarkable woman and her great grandson, Dov Forman, is also a very remarkable young man. At the age of sixteen he was separated from her during the Covid pandemic for the first time, and became determined to record her story for posterity. Lily was born in Hungary where she lived in the small town of Bonyhád with her three sisters and two brothers and their parents. It’s disgusting and shocking that humans still are able to harbor so much hatred and do these things, and speaks volumes to the importance of brave souls like Lily who are willing to share their experiences to hopefully educate others and prevent future atrocities. I think it's just as important for those not directly impacted by it to share that information with their children. Ao longo da leitura considerei a versão da Lily muito branda, tendo em conta relatos de outros sobreviventes. I needed to read this book, but I did expect it to be a little less refined in writing due to the TikTok aspect.

Your Grandson is a wonderful person who deserves the highest praise for encouraging and supporting you to tell your story and then find so many answers for you. At the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, there is a plaque that reads, ‘For ever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity, where the Nazis murdered about one and a half million men, women and children, mainly Jews, from various countries of Europe’. Lily lost so much, but she built a new life for herself and her family, first in Israel and then in London. Lily tracks the occasions on which simple moments of kindness from strangers enabled her to cultivate her sense of hope. Life continued largely as normal for the family, until the death of the father from natural causes in 1942.Prince Charles of Wales read a hard to understand introduction (more than likely read from a portable sound system) but I bow to him for letting the world know of his involvement in the holocaust project in his country albeit what is that 65 years later? Lily had promised herself that if she survived Auschwitz she would tell everyone the truth about the camp. Lily, having gone through so much, radiates strength and wisdom and both she and Dov warmed my heart. Neďaleko sa týčil vysoký komín, z ktorého sa zúrivo dymilo a občas z neho vyleteli jasné červené plamene.

As the allies advanced into German territory in early 1945, Lily and her group were sent on one of the notorious death marches across the territory ahead of the advancing liberators, before they were eventually saved by stumbling across some American soldiers. O facto de que as pessoas moldam as suas verdades, de modo a não se magoarem tanto e/ou de não causarem tanta dor em quem ouve.Later on Shmuel suffered poor health and needed a cooler climate so the family moved to Britain and settled in north London, leaving Rene and Piri back in Israel. A Jewish-American soldier is one of her liberators, and he gives her a dollar bill on which he had written, “Good luck and happiness. Couldn't put this down, well written, you must have had so many emotions and difficulty finding the right words but was done splendidly. I can’t even fully wrap my mind around everything Lily had to go through in life, I’m in awe about her strength, bravery and her outlook in life.
