I think my father, as a tapicero, as an upholsterer, taught me a lot about mastering craft and taking the time to make something well if your name was going to be put on it. Experience Cisneros's trademark vibrant poetry while traveling the world with her at all stages of her life.

In Resurrections, she talks about the things that no one told her (or that she hadn’t listened to and heard), including some of the changes that come with losing her parents: ”In Mexico they say when someone you love dies, a part of you dies with them. It includes those questions that she’d like to ask, that she’s too shy to ask, and that most clients surely want to ask: “Do you approve of me, or am I silly? She tells stories of working-class Latino life in America, particularly Chicago, where she grew up, and where she set her well-known book, The House on Mango Street. He is a former column editor for English Journal (National Council of Teachers of English), current series editor for Critical Literacy Teaching Series: Challenging Authors and Genres (Brill), and author of Teaching Writing as Journey, Not Destination: Essays Exploring What ‘Teaching Writing’ Means (IAP, 2019) and How to End the Reading War and Serve the Literacy Needs of All Students: A Primer for Parents, Policy Makers, and People Who Care (IAP, in press). Cisneros revisits and refines many many essays and speeches from her illustrious career; she illuminates many many facets of her life that I had not previously known about her. This collection of essays and book reviews span 30 years of Cisneros's writing career, they go into stories of her life, including her meeting Gwendolyn Brooks and others, her travels, and relationships with her family and friends.

And, you know, I always admired that my father had this little business card that said "Cisneros Upholstery: Custom Quality Furniture. Her words will make existing fans love her more, and drive new readers to reach for her previous works after closing this one. She, her parents, and her six brothers only find some sense of permanence during regular visits to her paternal grandparents in Mexico City. The title essay recounts her early days of living and writing in Bucktown, 'a down-at-the-heels' neighborhood of Chicago, where Nelson Algren once roamed and not far from Saul Bellow territory. A House of My Own by Sandra Cisneros is a memoir made up of essays, stories and speeches that Cisneros has written throughout her life. The reflections on “otherness” are so beautifully nuanced and many readers surely would relate to the emotions and feelings expressed in this memoir.

I still remember the first time I read her in high school and how my AP english teacher marveled at the compliment I gave her then. From the beloved author of The House on Mango Street: a richly illustrated compilation of true stories and nonfiction pieces that, taken together, form a jigsaw autobiography: an intimate album of a literary legend's life and career. When she was reading in Portland, Sandra Cisneros talked about losing track of what she had written BC (before computers).Written with her trademark lyricism, in these signature pieces the acclaimed author of The House on Mango Street and winner of the 2018 PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature shares her transformative memories and reveals her artistic and intellectual influences.
