As they dig into the story of the Esmond family, they learn Michael, the father, was dealing with an accusation at the university where he works. At the time of reading No Way Out I had not finished reading book two In the Dark so wasn't completely aware of the history as to how this change of roles came about, although it is hinted at, but as you'd expect when these types of role reversals happen it's always hard to accept change so it's no wonder there's resentment by Quinn towards his now superior. There are not standard chapters, which is something I thought I would hate when I read Hunter’s first book, but I was quickly proven wrong.

Ex-uniform Erica Somer, who played an important role in the previous book, makes the jump to CID, and joins the ranks of Fawley’s team as a Detective Constable, forcing her to prove herself to the same people, for entirely different reasons. The youngest, Zachary, died in the fire but his older brother Mattie is still alive and clinging to life in a hospital ICU. The youngest one was pronounced dead at the scene and the elder boy died in hospital a few days later. Gripping from the first page and not letting you go until the last word, we’re reunited with the characters we love. The story moves between past and present, giving the reader insight, as the investigation progresses, into how and why these horrific events came about.

I have seen other authors use this format and haven't always liked it, but Hunter uses it to great advantage. En esta tercera entrega de la serie del inspector Adam Fawley después de "¿Quién se ha llevado a Daisy Mason?Pero todos se preguntan dónde están los padres, y más aún cuando se confirma que el incendio fue provocado. It is fascinating how the elements are delicately revealed without a dramatic shift to the end game.

More compelling still is the fact that as with the previous two novels, this investigation is a real team effort with all of the recurring characters chipping in as the tasks are divvied up between them. The Felix House in an elite area of Oxford was on fire and two children were dragged from the inferno. Cara’s wonderful array of characters, clever gripping plot, and detail delivered ensure this will be a well-deserved best-selling novel. The next Adam Fawley novel from Cara Hunter is pacy and twisted, an addictive read with a strong emotional core featuring as it does a family in peril. Quinn is in the front row with his tablet in his hand and his pen behind his ear (yes, I know, it doesn't make sense, but that is what he does).

Cara Hunter, tal y como hizo en las anteriores novelas, intercala la narración con extractos de noticias de prensa, conversaciones de redes sociales, planos, fichas policiales de personas desaparecidas y así con un sinfín de información para complementar esta trepidante historia. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. You can read these as standalones, but this installment is a little harder to get because it hasn’t been released in the US, so you have to get a foreign edition online. I felt genuinely baffled and stupid that I’d missed hints, but then you experience your mind blowing and can’t help re-reading previous paragraphs or saying ‘noooooo’ repeatedly. I think because the crimes depicted in this series are so serious and sensitive, and thus far have all involved children, that it's nice to have a break once and a while and follow the character's on their downtime. As always, the strength of Hunter’s storytelling lies in her ability to constantly keep us on our toes.
