Even Andre is played well, as a gang banger/thief who is willing to team up with the afore mentioned people and survive. The old Blu-ray always crushed like crazy with black levels, but here you can actually see all of the details that you were missing in those dark spots.

The project then expanded to a second disc to include more related material, and eventually a third disc. There's an interesting discussion on the merits or otherwise of CG, and Chris Romero (who played the title character's cousin Christina in Romero's brilliant 1977 vampire movie Martin and subsequently married the director) thought at the time and still thinks today that the pie fight was the silliest thing she'd ever seen. With excellent gradational differences between the various shades, be it in the clothing, hair or shadows, visibility within the darkest, murkiest corners is consistently strong and solid. Certain items can take longer to source than the estimated week, particularly during busy trading periods and may take longer to arrive at our warehouse. Bates is an exceptional composer and Dawn of the Dead is one of his most entertaining and engaging scores.

The release date got pushed back a couple of times after an early tease, so the film’s many fans have been chomping at the bit for this for a long time. What I found interesting, watching the film now, was how much of it reminded me of the current COVID situation. Though again seeing a group of people holed up in a bid to survive the onslaught outside, the tone and scope is very different.

There are plenty of entertaining anecdotes – I particularly enjoyed the story about the zombie extras who photograph themselves in full make up using the mall's photo booth and then use the resulting pictures to replace the demo pictures of smiling family types on the booth's exterior. Combining this with the new black level, which is rich and deep with magnificent shadow depth, and highlights in the white scale that pop the image out, and you have a picture that is stunning. His work here maybe isn’t as refined as his later work, but this is purely due to the sheer volume of effects in the film. Dawn of the Dead, sensibly, sees Romero take a very different approach to the zombie movie than its predecessor. The director's cut is nothing of the sort but a version prepared for screening at Cannes that's pretty much the theatrical cut before its editing was tightened for general release. There is also better detailing visible in the clouds or in pretty much all daylight exteriors, and metallic surfaces have a more realistic shine to them, such as the scene with Peter and Roger hauling the trucks in front of the entrances. There’s a discussion about the remake too, which he was involved with (the commentary was recorded shortly before its release).

Things don’t get much better there, as the security guards try to control the group, and it’s not until they overpower and take things over themselves that they have a semblance of freedom. Colours are bright when they need to be (the helicopter paintwork is a good example) and naturalistic in the right lighting, though many scenes have a brown/green hue that may well be down to location lighting and/or colour balance on the original neg. With so many features there is quite a bit of crossover in content but there’s something new in every piece and the cast and crew talk so fondly of their experience on the film that it’s a pleasure to listen to them talk about it each and every time. Use the thumbs up and thumbs down icons to agree or disagree that the title is similar to Dawn of the Dead. The extended ‘Cannes’ cut may be the longest version of the film here but, by all accounts, it was a version that was hastily assembled for an early screening at the Cannes film festival, so is something of an advanced workprint.Francine (Gaylen Ross) is an executive there and she and her partner, Stephen (David Emge), plan to take a helicopter and get out of the city, where the outbreak is really taking its toll. There’s also a section on the influence of his films, including amusing clips from spoofs, such as Night of the Giving Head.

It's completely open matte up to the edge of the film frame, presented as virtually square, meaning a matte to 1. Authoring and compression are substantially better than the Universal BD-25, which employed the VC-1 codec and averaged 17099 kbps. The source for the Argento Cut presentation has used a new 4K scan of the interpositive, supervised by Michele De Angelis at Backlight Digital, Rome, producing a new 4K DI. Something I never noticed until seeing screenshots lined up like this, is how red the UK 1995 Entertainment In Video VHS below is, especially in comparison to the much brighter and clearer UK 1981 Intervision pre-cert VHS at the top. The Dead Will Walk’ takes a largely chronological approach, starting with Romero’s career and how it took him to Dawn. A trio of Region Free, dual-layered UHD66 discs sit comfortably opposite a Region B locked, dual-layered BD50 disc containing all the supplements. In either case, fans can better make out the stitching and faded creases in the worn leather jackets of the bike gang, the texture of the fabric in the furniture is more perceptible, and Tom Savini's gory makeup work is gorier and bloodier.
