The board was used on the 2001/02 semi-acoustic shows, 2005 Live 8 and 2005/06 On an Island recording sessions as well as several guest appearances between 1999-2012. The G2 was also featured in David’s 2006 Pete Cornish All Tubes MkII On an Island touring board and used for many of the performed songs. Picture to the left shows David’s early 1987-88 Momentary Lapse of Reason touring rig. Notice the #2 Big Muff featured in the setup. To the right is the Sovtek “Civil War” Big Muff Pi, David’s main distortion unit for the 1994 Division Bell tour.

Note that the original Silicon diodes are marked SYL GY920, but the actual diode types used are unknown. 1N914 (shown on the schematic) and 1N4148 are some modern equivalents that work, but they may not be identical to the original diodes. The differences are minor, but diode types do affect the sound frequencies that are clipped.COLORSOUND JUMBO TONEBENDER Modified V3 Big Muff - Around 1976 Sola Sound of London modified their Big Muff clone, the Supa Tonebender, changing some component values, and entirely removing the gain recovery stage. The values in the Jumbo Tonebender were basically from a V3 era Big Muff. The purpose of the last stage in the original design was to recover some of the audio gain lost (approximately 8db) in the tone section, so removing it made for a very weak, low gain Muff. It almost sounds like some of the clean signal is mixed in with the distortion. This made for a muff that was rather lifeless for electric guitar leads and chords, but worked very well for bass guitar. IV1 Triangle Big Muff - The high pass resistor value was 27k in the early units, but 33k was the most common. 22k and 39k were also used, but rarely. You will find the same range on the Guild Foxey Lady version.

Russian = the fattest mofo around but still clear enough to hear chords and different strings. It feels like the 3rd channel I wish I had in my amp. Absolutely massive sound but it doesn't loose too much definition/ A little muddier Dual Rectifier kind of thing REPLACEMENT FOOT SWITCHES - Vintage USA Big Muffs use old Carling SPDT (Single Pole Double Through) three lug foot switches. These are sometimes hard to find. The modern Carling model is #112-P, or you can get a Dunlop version, #ECB-69, often used for Crybaby Wah pedals. When replacing a foot switch in a modern Big Muff , use a modern 3PDT foot switch as those are wired for true bypass. The circuit is identical to a PNP triangle circuit from 1972, almost identical to the PNP circuit shown above. The only change made was the high pass cap in the tone section at C9. Typically .004µF, it was changed to 330pF in the Sustainar. This had the effect of retaining treble when the tone pot was turned to the bass side, making the bass range more useful. When fully in the bass position the overall volume level is significantly higher than other tone settings as well. The #2 is first seen lying on top of David’s Pete Cornish Animals touring board during the 1976 rehearsals and the following tour in 1977. It was again featured in the 1984 About Face stage rig and the 1989-90 leg of the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour. The pedal was also used during the rehearsals at Bray Studios, London UK, in May 2006 but replaced by a triangle model, which was used for the remainder of the On an Island tour. This pedal is one of Josh Scott’s greatest conceits: 6 beloved Muffs in one compact enclosure. Selectable on a dial are the V1 Triangle, V2 Ram’s Head, V3 IC Muff, V7 Civil War, V8 Russian, and a special JHS Muff with more midrange and less compression. Using all-analog circuitry, these aren’t just approximations of the original circuits, they are identical.
