Description

In fact, Cobra Kai does a pretty decent job of living up to these lofty comparisons, and it wouldn’t be amiss in an arcade cabinet of its own.

Aside from regular combos using kicks and punches, there are four dojo-specific skills such as a ground pound that can knock enemies off their feet and cause elemental damage. It is difficult to objectively rate this Cobra-Kai in an industry where this type of game has completely disappeared from the shelves. The thing is, the Terry we meet is well-adjusted and happy to live his life as a (seemingly) retired entrepreneur with a hot vegan girlfriend. With the fantastic Streets of Rage 4 only recently bringing the genre back to the forefront of gaming, can the Cobra Kai game capitalise on it and deliver a fun-filled, side-scrolling brawler too? Part of the weirdness of Season 4 comes from a kind of hokeyness that wasn’t expected, and it’s not because they’ve brought younger characters into the fold.

Additionally, every character has four special moves to unlock, which are all very cool and easy to initiate; as an honorary member of Cobra Kai, I especially love how Miguel’s moves, like the flying double kick, fit him perfectly. It is here that Cobra Kai sometimes falls down as enemies move around the play area, as sometimes attacks are harder to land than they should be. It was like areas of the floor you couldn't walk on it, but Krees jumped into the air and landed on the part of the floor that you can't walk on. When you unlock the Dodge the Irony achievement/trophy you will also fulfill one of the Challenges towards the Purple Belt achievement/trophy.

Seeing it remain such a plot point after we’ve spent three years with their “on again off again” frenemyship is a little frustrating. Cobra Kai does offer couch co-op, with a second player able to jump in on an additional controller, although I didn’t play this way while carrying out this review. And just like Season 4 gave Robbie a bullied kid to mentor in Kenny, Season 5 allows Oona O'Brien's Devon to emerge from the ashes of the All-Valley, ready to make Tory's life exponentially more complicated.

Thankfully you can reset your points if you prefer a different build or if you’d prefer to work on your favourite character rather than the dojo and vice vera. Choose a side, master your moves, and embrace your destiny in an epic beat 'em up adventure inspired by the hit show.Full disclaimer: I grew up on the Karate Kid, well, I had a fairly balanced diet, and even performed my fair share of crane kicks in the playground (not real fights, of course).
