Description

Slash is the worst Warriors villain and I hate that he was in this book, much less the main problem for the last third. Kind of girlboss of Finch to kill him though.

First off, much of the first half of the book is a remix of the Dawn of the Clan series but from River Ripple’s pov. And the second half is mostly traveling which can be fun but gets receptive since they do it at least once in every arc. Ripple doesn't feel like the same cat after his journey down the river, so he renames himself River Ripple for the river that brought him there. The following morning, they say farewell, and Riverstar and Drizzle set off… and then Finch wades into the river: she's changed her mind. The river's still a bit swollen, but they ride on the raft almost to the forest. They come upon some rapids upstream of the falls, however, which destroys the raft and nearly kills Drizzle. They know they have to go on foot from there, but at least they're close to the forest. Riverstar was the first leader of RiverClan in the forest territories. Ripple lived with the Cats of the Park until Twolegs destroyed their home. He was swept away towards the forest territories, where he renamed himself River Ripple in honor of the river who saved his life. River Ripple lived as a loner near the river, and befriended Night and Mist, who taught him how to swim and fish. He was briefly captured by Twolegs and lived as a kittypet. Feeling the call of the river, River Ripple returned and encountered the groups from the mountains. He befriended them, but remained distant. However, he was inspired by their culture and loyalty towards each other, and River Ripple eventually formed his own group of loners next to the river. His group was originally informal, but he was officially called to be leader after the spirit cats appeared at the four trees. I went into this with extremely low expectations because the Erins often ruin characters in their super editions. I was pleasantly surprised for the first half of the book i enjoyed it a lot I was really happy with it. However my newly found hopes were CRUSHED to dust as the book DRASTICALLY took a turn for the worse, ruined Riverstar's character by scrapping almost everything that made him unique and interesting, somehow wrote in extremely boring plots and a whole traveling arc that was pointlessly long and then introduced a mate for him 24 chapters into the book that has the personality of a leaf.I'm Quiet Rain. With this life, I give you kindness and humility. Show the compassion you show to your Clanmates to every cat you meet. Remember, you might walk in their paw steps one day and they in yours. The next scene is several seasons later, at the end of Moth Flight's Vision. Wind Runner's daughter Moth Flight has found the Moonstone, a place to communicate with the spirit-cats, which were now called StarClan. The Clans each have a medicine cat now, and Wind Runner had been brought to the Moonstone when dying, where she'd been healed by StarClan, given nine lives, and renamed Windstar. River Ripple, now, was going to receive nine lives of his own.

The Medic: Dappled Pelt is knowledgeable about healing herbs, and ends up becoming RiverClan's first medicine cat. It builds on that, then the 2nd half of the book has Riverstar just up and leaves his Clan without solving this to go help cats he has absolutely nothing at all to do with. Just him tho. And all so the writers can do wat they should have done in Dawn of the Clans. Kill Slash and give Riverstar a mate. Prequel: Dawn of the Clans and its supplemental books take place long before the main series or any of the other prequels. yup. That's it. This is 3 years too late for anyone to care about Slash and no one wanted or cared if Riverstar takes a mate.

This book contains examples of the following:

Never Got to Say Goodbye: River Ripple never got to say goodbye to the cat he loved, Flutter, when she was captured by Twolegs. With this life, I give you initiative, so you will always lead and never follow. Even if your courage fails, your imagination will find a way to guide you. Both of Riverstar's romances felt forced. Flutter is barely even a character and I think Finch would've been better off as his friend. Though I will give credit where credit is due, Night and RR's friendship is really sweet. And I'm glad they make it completely clear that it's entirely platonic. I'm so used to Warriors and literature in general not just letting a man and a woman just be friends. The meditation thing was a good idea, I just wish it got further. They decided to throw it away to make Riverstar more unconfident and easy to compare with Arc: Arc is chill because he meditates, Riverstar is insecure because he doesn't.

I mostly enjoyed this book. I wish that there was lesss retelling of the events that happen in DOTC books and more of park cats and life in the park and I wish that we got more from Riverstar in general but I liked the book I guess. And how are we going to brush past how Skystar almost murdered Arc in cold blood? He was a passing rogue who clearly knows nothing about the Clans or their boundaries. All he had to do was scare him off with some empty threats. Nearly fatally injuring him was so unnecessary. I thought Skystar had agreed to be less vicious in the end of DotC. But whatever.) I'm glad that Night is not a romantic interest. It feels so rare to see such a well developed platonic friendship in these books. Fainting: Ripple passes out from exhaustion after going over a waterfall and making it out of the river. Dead Person Conversation: The spirits of the recently-deceased cats appear after the battle at The Four Trees, as well as in a dream to the leaders not long afterward.
