Each evening, Keyana's mother lovingly combs out her tangles before bed and, when it hurts, Mama assures her that she is very lucky to have such hair ""because it's beautiful and you can wear it in any style you choose.

Keyana doesn't feel lucky to have such a head of hair--until Mama reminds her of all the lovely ways her wonderful hair can be fixed. This book is so beautifully illustrated, and it goes through all the ways black girls can wear and love their natural hair. I think if books like this, that give power and respect to Black hair, were more available as windows and mirrors for students that divide between hair would be less apparent. This is great read-aloud for young children because they can easily identify with the main character. Although Valentina didn’t directly tell me, I know she was impressed that the girl’s mum oiled her scalp like I do for her.Imaginatively, the woman goes on to say that she can spin it into a fine, soft bun or “plant rows of braids” along her scalp, prompting her daughter to think of other wonderful things she likes about her hair. Woodson (If You Come Softly; I Hadn't Meant to Tell You This) lays out her resonant story like a poem, its central metaphor a fence that divides blacks from whites. Natasha is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and is the cofounder of Voonderbar! The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. Well, she thinks she’s reading but in fact she’s repeating what she remembers and filling in the blanks with her interpretation of the illustrations. Her mom was teaching her valuable lessons In taking great pride for the way we can change our hair would. It would be terrific to just read this book without having an emphasis on differences, but similarities. The authors both showed all throughout the book the unique styles and how to be proud of your crown. But the style also has historical importance, for, as her teacher tells her, ""wearing an Afro was a way. Every night before she goes to bed, Keyana sits down between her mother's knees to have her hair combed. Lewis’s soft watercolor illustrations perfectly accompany this sweet story of self-acceptance, empowerment, and hope. Betsy Bird is currently the Collection Development Manager of the Evanston Public Library system and a former Materials Specialist for New York Public Library.I will also confess that I did consider doing Nappy Hair by Carolivia Herron, which came out in 1997, but I don’t think I’m adept enough to tackle the issues that came up when that book hit the marketplace.

A little but important and empowering book - obviously as the title tells us, this is all about girls loving their hair, despite the pain that all that brushing and combing can involve. Print pictures of all students and have them each use supplies to make different hair on themselves. For 20 years or so, I refused to wear my hair naturally because I did not appreciate or remember my natural texture. It means a lot for an African American little girl to know she is different, but still feel good about herself.
