Keep an eye on your gauge if you have one as this will tell you when you need to empty it, but at least once a week or it may cause a smell! Can you put bleach in my portable camping toilet? The Blue Diamond loolooks very much like the highly-rated Enders camping toilet, but there are differences. Not to be trusted! p.s. just noticed that this was from 2011, oh well I expect people still need to shit in the woods in 2012. And have a look at our article on green camping for homemade wet wipes and lots more ideas for environmentally friendly camping. Toilet Tents We use the JUPSK trowel above because it has lots of other uses too – from sawing branches to pulling out nails. It has a bag too.

The Dragons’ Den featured BoginaBag Portable Toilet is a unique and highly acclaimed portable toilet that is very robust and boasts a lightweight design. It’s perfect for festival goers or camping enthusiasts who need somewhere to readily use the toilet. It can also be used as a normal stool. It’s that moment when you’re holding your 3-year-old on the dirtiest, smelliest loo of your life for the 15 to 20 minutes he takes deciding whether to do a number 2. Beam me up… somebody, anybody! Travel John make bags with a special plastic top to fit to the body. Very similar to the Peebol above, they contain something to soak up the liquid. You have a point about soft ground, especially soft wet ground (sand, mud etc) could be an issue. Tarp on the ground or plastic bag should solve it or even splash out (excuse the pun) for their waterproof cover.

We really love the Lumaland gazebo, which we use as a campervan awning and in the garden at home. So, good to see there’s another goody from this German brand. If we’d had less to carry, we’d have definitely brought along our My Carry Potty, the portable ‘suitcase’ potty with carry handle – great for toddlers on the move. BoginaBag is a lightweight seat which can be easily converted to a portable toilet for use outdoors. When a bush or tree allows for a discreet wee, we women need a little help. Many people swear by the Shewee-type devices, which allow women to wee like a man…almost. Other items you might want to arm yourself with: extra loo paper, anti-bacterial toilet seat wipes, air freshener (you could make up an essential oil spray if you don’t like the ones on the market), disposable seat covers. The VW California Club is the worlds largest resource for all owners and enthusiasts of VW California campervans. People are taken out on trips and no one bothers to explain how to properly and safely deal with a basic human need in what is to them an alien environment. There are bin liners you could use, but most of these aren’t biodegradable, so you’ll be adding to the world’s mountains of plastic waste. If you must use bags, make sure they’re properly BIOdegradable (like Branq Camping Bio bags). Folding out as a seat and having the function to be a toilet that is hygienic and uses no chemicals, making it totally unique! I have used one of these for several years on canoe trips and it is still going strong despite being cardboard.

Many camping toilet bags (and the Travel John bags) have a sort of crystal-filled ‘nappy’ inside to soak up liquid. We think this is important because a plastic bag filled with sloshiness sounds like a disaster waiting to happen and isn’t pleasant for waste collectors. I'm not sure whether this is in the spirit of this thread as it is at the extreme end of the portable spectrum, but the Bog in a Bag saved my life at the Belgian Grand Prix camping last year. It's a strong, lightweight, folding three-legged stool with a strong fabric seat with a large velcro flap covering an ample bum-sized hole! After a two-hour grilling and three offers she walked away with a new business partner and the dragon she wanted. As a minor critique, I would say maybe the makers could create adjustable legs in case you need to squat inside a very low tent!

Ask any non-camper why they don’t fancy a tent or campervan and the answer will either be something to do with the weather or it’ll be worries about needing the loo.
