If you’ve had problems with filler sinking or sagging in the middle when you’re trying to repair larger holes, don’t worry, it’s nothing you’re doing wrong. The best way to choose the right wood filler to repair gouges and large-sized holes in your wood is to know the types of filler materials out there. For good measure, leave the paint to dry overnight so you’re guaranteed that it is completely dry before applying the second coat.

Now you need to measure and cut two noggins (horizontal wood that bridges the gap between the studs). Use a bit of 2 x 4 inch – approximately 100mm x 50mm – timber to create the noggins. Nail or screw them into position, between the studs, from the sides. This will create an area to fix your new plasterboard patch to.This is very similar to two-part epoxy but a wood hardener and a resin need to be applied to strengthen the wood.

Industry Connections: We maintain close ties with manufacturers and brands, offering insights into trends and upcoming products. For deeper repairs, above 50mm, build the filler up in layers ensuring it has dried between applications. You mix it like dough and mold it like clay even after it dries. When it hardens, you can carve it just like any wood. Cut a piece of plasterboard that is slightly narrower than the hole but an inch or so longer top and bottom. Screw in a long screw in the middle of the patch; this will be used to position the patch in place.

The first thing to do is to cut out a rectangle around the hole using a steel rule and a Stanley knife. Alternatively, mark out with a pencil and ruler and cut out with a jab saw. If you’re filling smaller spaces or just don’t want the potential mess of powder, ready-mixed paste is the best solution. It’s practical and can be reused – just make sure you seal it tightly after use. However, paste is more expensive than powder and will already be pre-mixed in precise ratios to a particular consistency. A high-quality wood primer needs to be applied so that the paint would adhere to the surface of the wood you’re painting. This method is very similar to fixing holes in plasterboard on walls. If it’s a small screw hole or nail hole just use a putty knife and a suitable filler, and smooth out. Rub down when finished.
