In 2018, Fredi became one of the international climate scientists writing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) The Scientific Basis, which was published in August 2021, she is also an author on the IPCC's final report of the sixth assessment cycle, the Synthesis Report which was published in March 2023. Otto was named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People of 2021 and and as one of the top 10 people who helped shape science in 2021 by the journal Nature. We have known that this is happening since 1896, when Svante Arrhenius discovered the connection between global warming and greenhouse gases. We have observed rising global temperatures over the course of the 20th century, and the science advisory committee of Lyndon Johnson’s presidency warned of global warming in 1965. We need to be able to move beyond the general global trends that have tended to dominate the conversation on climate change.

Extreme heat was also a key driver of the bushfires that destroyed lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems in southeast Australia. I had actually heard a couple of weeks ago that they had determined that this heat wave WAS more likely due to climate change and that it was 2C warmer than it would otherwise have been without climate change; when I heard that, I had no idea that a book I’d planned to pick up this month was going to look at that very thing! Their methods rely on heavy amounts of computing, which relies a lot on energy and rare earth metals (pulling in info from the recent book I read). Perhaps, the information could be used as evidence in trials against the contributors of climate change.

So, far from being about some dry technicalities regarding climate attribution and statistical analysis, this book could become part of the tool-kit of everyone involved in action to limit the extent and severity of man-made global warming.
